SUPPLEMENT TO McHENRY PLAINDEALER - PAGE 28 -WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24.1979 Inside window sealing kit cuts heat loss dramatically By using insulation wisely, many of the houses in the United States can save as much as 50 percent on heat ing or cooling costs, which is a substantial offset to inflat ing energy prices. This is especially true of the majority of houses built before the 1960's, and those with air conditioning units in stalled after the house was completed. However, it's important tp balance your efforts to save on energy costs. For exam ple, let's assume you've spent some money for attic insulation. That's good, but if you've neglected putting on storm windows or laying in sulation under floors over crawl spaces, you're being penny wise and pound GOING . . . GOING GONE! JAN. 25, 26, 27 DURING OUR DOLLAR DAYS We Want To Clear Our Racks During Dollar Days, And Feel The Best Way To Do So Is By Reducing Our Winter Apparel FASHIONS BY 1216 N. Gr««n St. McHenry foolish in terms of saving dol lars for heating. A substantial proportion of all the heat lost in a house is througlF^ts windows and •, doors. Today, because of recent advances in technology, it's inexpensive and very easy for the do-it-yourselfer to in sulate windows. For example, a new prod uct recently developed, ac cording to independent labo ratory tests, cuts heat loss from uninsulated wood win dows by as much as 93 per cent! Tests also show that it is 26 percent more effective than typical ttiple-track storm windows. Called the "Weatherizer, the all season window sealing kit" by its manufacturer, Plaskolite, Inc., Columbus, Ohio, it is semi-rigid, comes in a roll, and is nearly optically per fect, according to the maker. The high optical qualities, according to the manufac turer, are because it's made of the same material used for X-ray film, although much heavier. Weatherizer's big advan tage is that it is extremely light and can be easily han dled by a housewife. a* MAIN PAINT Dolly 9-5:30 Sot. 9-5 AND DECORATING INC. 3819 W. Main St. McHenry SAVE UP TO 20%o. Main St. McHenry, II. 385-1115 Because it is mounted on the inside, there is no danger present as when ladders are used. It is wrinkle-free, hangs straight, is scratch- resistant, very tough and tear-proof. By being mount ed on the windowjrame with tape, it eliminates virtually 1(X) percent of air infiltration. "Infiltration" is the engineer's word for air that penetrates through cracks . . . cracks in the window, and cracks between the win dow and its frame. The Weatherizer stops all that. However, besides cracks between the window ar-'. its frame, in old houses there are • sometimes cracks between the window frame itself and the wall. Caulking and putty will close off thus kii'd of infiltra tion. In addition it's good to check around chimneys for any cracks allowing air to come in. Infiltration of air around doors is frequently a serious source of heat loss. Weath- erstripping and molding around the doors is the way to stop this. Still another place to check for cracks is around your air conditioner if it's been in stalled in your window. All in all, if you've stopped heat loss through and around doors and windows, you're going to save a lot of money you've been literally throw ing out the window. Little things add to decor It's the little things in life that count and, very often, the same thing holds true in the sphere of home decorat ing. It's those small touches, often whimsical, often im pulsive, the ^knick-knacks that grace your shelves and tables, the paintings and posters that hang on your walls, that truly personalize your home and make it an ex tension ofyou. You may want to project different parts of your per sonality in different rooms. The kitchen, often a bright and cheery room, can be come, especially for the per son who loves to cook, a fa vorite room, and the first place where he or she will begin to accessorize and per sonalize. Hang things on the walls. Putting up a pegboard is an attractive way of displaying everything neatly, and it is eminently functional as well. Your favorite cooking tools, cookie cutters and decora tive pot holders as well as pots and pans, can spice up your kitchen and become an integral part of your decor. Since you'll probably be doing most of your formal entertaining in your living room, you've probably gone to a good deal of trouble in choosing your furniture and accessories. Add little touches with the same care. Hors D'oeuvres For a new appetizer, try delicate crepettes asperges: they're miniature crepes spread with the popular onion soup mix and sour cream combination. Wrap around asparagus spears and you'll be glad you did! Another unique hor d'oeuvre is a splash of unflavored gelatin blended with Roquefort, cream cheese and Worcestershire sauce.
