Route 120, McHenry - 815-385-8060 '2" " 5LB-Q.n.0.a..lLfl 8 8 8 8 9 9 fl fl.fi Q The winter of '79 has brought above normal amounts of snow to much of the northern portion of the nation. Excessive amounts of snow are beginning to create stress conditions for the whitetail deer. Starvation of deer could become a problem if severe winter weather persists. Whenever snow depths ex ceed 18 inches and tem peratures are below normal for a period of twenty or more days, the whitetail deer begins to encounter problems. The average height of the "belly line" of the whitetail deer is 18 inches. When snoto depths exeed this level, deer have difficulty moving through the snow to obtain food. Under these conditions, deer will group together in low-land areas commonly called "deer yards". A typical yarding area is a swamp or terrain containing primarily evergreens. Yarding of deer into small areas causes food shortages and the deer will remain in the yard until the arrival of spring even though food supplies have been exhausted. As food supplies dwindle in the deer yard, survival can be measured in inches as the taller (mature) deer can reach higher for food. In extreme cases, deer will "bark" balsams which is considered to be a starvation food. When available food supplies are exhausted, deer will starve. The young deer (fawns of the preceding spring) are the first * to be affected, llie young bucks are most susceptible to star vation becaus they enter the winter months in a less than desirable condition following the breeding season. When food shortages occur, artificial feeding programs are, at best, a very short term solution. Research has shown that when given a choice, deer will feed on natural browse until the supply is gone before utilizing the artificial food. Artificial feeding tends to hold the deer in the yarding areas longer than normal. This leads to over-browsing of the prime food species and can prevent further growth of the species.. Eventually, the deer will move to a yarding area which no longer has food available even at the beginning of winter. The extreme result of food Shortages is the starvation of deer. Even when no starvation occurs, the future deer herd may be affected. A severe winter may lead to a lower .fawn-to-doe ratio the following spring In addition, there may be higher than normal mor tality in the fawn crop. It doesn't seem so long ago that we were picking peppers and freezing broccoli. But there are a few ways to maintain sanity while surrounded by mountains of snow. No^ is the time to be looking through the 1979 seed catalogs. Planning next spring's garden and choosing new varieties can help you remember that a spring thaw is inevitable. To receive these catalogs simply write to these addresses: Geo. W. Park Seed Co., Inc., 260 Cokesburg Rd., Greenwood, S C. 29647; Henry Field Seed & Nursery Co., Shenandoah, Iowa 51602; Burpee Seed Co., Clin ton, Iowa 52732; and R.H. Shumway Seedsman, 628 Cedar St., Rockford, 111. 61101. Almost everyone has some plants in his home. One of the plants adapted to our lifestyle is the African Violet. The African Violetv grows and blooms well under artificial light, o N* ' Special lights are not essential. A simple fluorescent fixture placed eight to twelve inches above the top of the plants gives excellent lighting when turned on for 16 hours a day. Humidity is important, naturally. Humidifiers help maintain higher humidity levels. If you don't use a humidifier, you may put your plants in that room in your house which has the highest relative humidity, such as the bathroom. An interesting fact about African Violets is that they display reverse ther- moperiodicity. Most plants grow best when day tem peratures are higher than night temperatures. So for families who are gone to work and school all day and turn their thermostat down by day and up by night, African Violets are well suited for them. Use a commercial African Violet food according to directions. If you have g . African Violets and want to try another plant with the same requirements, try the Dauphine Violets. The leaves are much smaller and as the plant gets larger, it begins to trail These are often grown with several plants in a basket The flowers are more delicate than those of the African violet and are produced over the entire plant, not only from the crown of the plant FOOD FACTS&FANCIES The eat ing of mushrooms has cer ta inly mushroomed since ancient t imes. In ancient Egypt only the pharoahs were al lowed to eat them. In la ter ages the pr ized fungi were consumed chief ly by royal ty and the nobi l i ty . Despi te i ts h is tory of lof ty s ta tus , 91 percent of a mushroom's f lesh is water . * * * Some groups of people are bananas over bananas.
