^ J'U f c f v f / ? PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. FEBRUARY 2, 1979 Downs Rotary 61-48 Warriors To Face Tough Opponents A strong performance will be needed from McHenry forward Bob Zeller, shooting over John Bradshaw last Friday against Jacobs (above) and his teammates this weekend, as they face a busy schedule. The improving Warriors travel to Crown Friday night to battle the Fox Valley conference leaders. It is the first of three games in five days for the Warriors, who travel to Libertyville Saturday for a non-conference tilt, and then host Crystal Lake Central Tuesday night in another conference game. In December, Crown blasted McHenry 76-49 at Buckner gym. This weekend, the local crew will try to knock off a first place team for the second week in a row and avenge the early season defeat. Jacobs was in first in the conference, before the Warriors suprised them 63-53 last Friday. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Three In Row By Dick Rabbitt It will be a hectic weekend plus for Coach Ken Ludwig and his Warriors cagers. The Warriors will face their toughest task of the season over the next five days. Tonight the Warriors travel to Crown to take on the first place Vikings in a Fox Valley conference game. The Warriors upset win over Jacobs last weekend allowed the Vikes to step up a notch in the top spot in the conference. Led by sophomore Gary Gilseman, the Vikings are 14 and 1 on the season, and according to Coach Jim Hinkle plan on remaining on top the rest of the season. Back in December the Vikings defeated the Warriors 76 to- 49. and the outlook is bleak in tonight's game. Tomorrow night the Warriors take to the road again when they invade the lair of the Libertyville Wildcats in a non- conference game. In days gone by in the North Suburban these two teams put on many a fine battle, but Larry Leon has an experienced crew awaiting the Warriors tomorrow night. The Cats are trailing North Chicago and Zion in the newly formed North Suburban. Its an old rivalry, and you can bet there will be plenty of action in the Wildcat gym tomorrow night. On Tuesday, a make up game with the Tigers of Crystal Lake Central will be played here at Buckner Gym. Coach Tom Wilkins's crew lost lost a 64 to 60 game to Crown last Friday and will be out to make amends. Bruce « Statter 6'6" Tiger center is now rounding into form that was expected of him early in the season. And Mr. Everything Tom Pence has begun to find the range that made hirn a terror the past three seasons. The Warriors showed some spunk and moxie last week in beating Jacobs, and on any given night can make a &fTap of trouble for their opponents. It may be a lot to ask, but maybe the Warriors can pick up at least a couple of wins in the three games. We all know they will be in there doing the best for their legion fans. BASKETBALL SCOREBOARD The McHenry Rotary will reportedly schedule a rematch with the local Kiwanis club, after the Kiwanians defeated them in a basketball game Friday night. The final score was 61-48, in the game between two of McHenry's civic organizations, as players from both teams take a breather (above) while waiting to see if a shot by a Rotary player goes in the basket. "A well-balanced attack by the Kiwanis was the key," according to Bob Mortell, who along with Chamber of Commerce president Kit Carstens, past C of C president Tom Low, Jim Marinangel, Denis Buch, Phil Kiefer, Bryce Klontz and Bob Peterson earned the victory. Playing well for the Rotary in a losing effort were Dennis Conway, who thrilled fans with a couple of thirty footers. Chamber of Commerce executive director Bob Prendergast, Ed Cepulis, Denny Welter, Mike Low, Paul Jenkins, Phil Bartmann, Ed Samen, Jim McGillavary, School District 156 superintendent Bob Swartzloff and Bob Shulda. Even the cheerleading of Don Howard and Chuck Peterson could not change the outcome. Grandma would have been proud of those hens. Can spring be far away? Owner Bill Veeck and manager Don Kessinger of the Chicago White Sox gathered a few players and coaches around them Monday to answer questions from phoning fans. Incidentally, Veeck and the boys took orders for season tickets and ran up enough sales to top last year's total. One suspects that Bill Veeck's mother didn't raise dumb children. The Walshes met John Wagner'at Murphy's Corner when the weather was mild and heard his plans for a trip to Florida. Now comes a beautiful card from John and Gail from Naples with a notation: "Thought that we would wait until you people had about enough winter so you would like to look at a scene like this." Those southerners from the north like to let us know that fun in the sun beats an Igloo in the snow. Big time stars of the en tertainment world have taken over TV commercials. " That's a lot of nonsense. They need those jobs like they need holes in their heads There must be attractive, less affluent people who could use those jobs and sell the products. Guess it's the old story - "Them what has gits ". A report from the Illinois Women's Bowling Association tournament just hit our desk and what do you know -- Right there in a third place tie is McHenry Floral. That made us sit up and take notice I treasure a program from Lorraine Nye of McHenry High's thirty-first annual alumni banquet held in Justen's Hotel <Riverside) way back in 1925. ' Whoops! They called it a Programme. Alfred Pouse was the toastmaster. Leo Heimer (silver tongued orator) welcomed the graduates, Wm. Nye responded. Then came a song by Mildred Welch. Now hear this -Toast to the ladies -- Earl Walsh. Mamie Whiting gave the response. Dorothy Knox sang. Miss Pryor and Mr. Duker are listed under Remarks. The assembled crowd sang Auld Lang Syne to wind up the program. Of course, the menu was printed and let me tell thee they served great meals. But, 1925? That's 54 years ago. From time to time I meet people who would enjoy writing anonymous letters to others to tell them what they think of them. Some will say. "Put that in your column". No way. My better half has always accused me of liking to go to wakes for a good visit. Now. I can't see anything wrong with a visit after paying one's respects and offering sympathy. After all. you meet people at wakes that you haven't seen in a long time. It was that way Monday night when relatives, neighbors and friends gathered at the wake for Herman Dowe. We were neighbors on Rich mond Road when those Dowe children were growing up. Herman loved to travel and covered all but six states in this vast country. On his last trip. 1 am sure he travelled in the right direction with no detours. So long, January. No hard feelings. Just go away. Johnsburg forward Chris Dixon will be one player Beloit Catholic will keep their eye on Friday night, when the second place Skyhawks invade the Crusader's gym for a Shark conference rematch. The junior forward, shown above notching a two-pointer last Friday night against Hononegah, scored 24 points in the season's first meeting between the two clubs, making 77 percent of his field goal attempts. Johnsburg won that game, 72-54. The Skyhawks are currently in second place in the conference with a 4- 2 record, one game behind conference leader Marengo. Beloit Catholic is in fourth place with a 4-4 record, and has shown vast improvement in recent weeks.
