Jtllllllllll OrrThe Sidelines By Dick Robbitt The Warrior basketball team had the home fans humming last Friday night when they defeated Jacobs 63 to 53. Coach Ken Ludwig pulled a switch in the second period, going from a zone to a full court man to man press that baffled the Golden Eagles. The dazed Eagles never knew what hit them during that eight minute stretch of the ball game. It was a pleasure to see. and like the fans', we hope that they can do the same over the next five days when they play three tough opponents. Playing Crown the conference leader, then taking on the always dangerous Libertyville Wildcats over the weekend, both on the road.is a tough hurdle to say the least these days. Then coming back on Tuesday to play the Tigers of Crystal Lake Central in another conference game, the young and inexperienced Warriors can say they played the best on their schedule in a matter of a few days. Coach Marty Sobczak's "Rassling Warriors" finally ' had men make weight, a miminum of injuries and sickness at a standstill last Saturday. As a result they lost a close match to Zion Benton 30 to 28. The genial coach has had his problems this season, but with the conference tonight and tomorrow at Woodstock, and the District next week, sees some possibilities for his squad. With all the layoffs due to weather conditions, it is getting to be a problem for all coaches in a sport - where weight is an important factor along with a daily practice schedule. The girls' basketball team along with the swimmers are returning to action this week. Both squads are improving, . and as the old saying "It takes patience". Both Pam Schaefer and Mike Shanahan do have the patience, and things are looking upward for both squads. Every day a few more Alumni are calling in willing to take part in the McHenry High School Booster Club's game on Feb. 17th. If any alumni are still interested, call this writer, Bill Blankenhorn or Twig Miller. The Booster Club is doing a great job, and all proceeds go to help the McHenry High Athletic Department. They inform me that more players are needed to make the game a success. Dust off the old shoes, give a call, practice time will be arranged for you, and help out the school. Remember last year when a big turnout attended, and a fun time was had by all. Especially after the game at a local watering {dace. So give a call, your help will be appreciated. , Thanks to Greg Johnson, principal of West Campus. The former Bloomington resident, handed me a copy of the Bloomington Pantagraph sports edition. It seems that a feud is brewing between Bradley University and Illinois State University. The new Bradley coach Dick Verace, formerly of Gordon Tech and University of Michigan assistant coach is making waves in Central Illinois circles. When I.S.U. recently defeated the Braves, the outspoken coach of the Bradley team blamed the fans, the officials and security at Horton Field House for the Bradley loss. The jest of the story from I.S.U. is that Verace is lucky to have the Bradley job. If it were not for the Bradley Chiefs Club, Tony Yates a black, and present assistant from Illinois would have been the Bradley coach. It must be noted that a few days later Verace was in another scuffle at Tulsa Unviersity, and made some off color remarks regarding the blacks playing basketball. Am sure that Tim Althoff and Tom Les former Bradley players have heard the other side of the story, so am sending them my copy so that they can have both views of the feud that is going on downsdate, Going back to 1936 in Woodstock in the regional tourney for this week's game of the past seasons. The Warriors defeated Crystal lake in the opening round 24 to 21. They lo6t to Woodstock in the second game 28 to 25, and then in the consolation which is no longer permitted, dropped a 31 to 21 decision to Hebron. Woodstock was the tourney winner a 32 to 25 victor over Harvard. Center on that Harvard team was Hugh Deneen, former Marquette great, and presently an attorney in McHenry County.
