Many dogs are awaiting a new home, cats are often temporary visitors as well. Since there is no county funding for the care of cats, animal control does so with humane intent. However faciUties are limited and their stay is short. Please come for a visit and find yourself a pet to love. Call them at 338-7040. Photo Credit: Don Kaiser By EsteUe Atwell Sounds alert us to much of the usual in our daily routines, and to the unexpected as well. But the hearing impaired cannot rely on this valuable faculty. Now there is a promising program related to the use of dogs trained to alert and assist the hearing impaired. It is American Humane's Hearing Dog Program. American Humane is in its 100th year of service in the United States and its animal division provides services to some 2,000 Humane societies throughout the U.S. The organization is based in Colorado, 5351 South Roslyn street, Englewood 80110. The Hearing Dog Program provides well-trained, cost-free dogs to any hearing impaired individual who qualifies. Dogs are trained at their Denver training center in obedience and to alert their masters to selected sounds, e.g., alarm clocks, smoke alarms, a baby's cry, doorbells, or door knocks, phone TTY systems, burglars, etc. They are not trained to attack. All hearing dogs are selected from animal shelters, thus providing an alternative to euthanasia. When the program opened there were merei thirteen applications. Today there are over 400 and the list grows longer daily. The greatest single need of the program is in the area of funding, and donations are welcome. Capable personnel in the field of animal training, and those with experience in working with the deaf are on the staff. Training techniques are designed so that they can be passed on from trainer to trainer and at this stage are still changing as methods improve. When they are refined a manual will be compiled for use by regional training cen ters. At present there is only one of these located in San Francisco. Regional training centers are operated in con junction with local humane societies. Factors taken into consideration for the selection of regional centers are the density of the hearing impaired population in the area, the desire of the individual humane society to become involved, their willingness and ability to provide local funding, public awareness programs, and the availability of facilities. Regional centers cannot be opened until sources of funding are located. This is a concept of great worth and Helping Paws feels it should be called to the attention of its readers.
