The modular furniture has been used unconventionally to create a sofa and a chaise. The pieces, with a genuine wicker base trimmed with bam- boo-turned wood are from American of Martinsville's new "South Pacific** group, as is the unusual trunk and the armoire that can perform multiple storage duties. While we are all taught the wisdom of planning ahead, not too many of us really do. It may seem a nearly impos sible feat with our lives or our finances, but it i£ally isn't too difficult in sohie areas. Buying for your ftp me, for example. Furniture is generally a fairly 4ong term investment, so it makes good sense- well as cents) to think of it long range terms. Fortu* nately, furniture manufac-'* turers are helping on this score. Much of today's furniture comes in modules that can be grouped and re-grouped in any number of arrangements. When you shop, don't think only about the room that the furniture will be used in now, but consider how it could be used elsewhere later on, also. Some bright, young new ly-weds, with a small-scaled home in the present and with an eye to the future, did just that, and with remarkable success. In a very modestly sized living room, they man aged not only to provide substantial seating or loung ing room and good storage space, but everything that they bought can be re arranged or used elsewhere. They chose American of Martinsville's sprightly "South Pacific" collection with its eye-appealing real wicker trimmed in solid maple cut to look like bam boo. Instead of a conventional sofa, they selected pieces from the modular or "pit" group. Two corner units and an armless chair were joined to make a sofa, while another armless chair and an ottoman were put together to form a chaise lounge for reading or relaxing. When they move into larger quarters, as they hope to when they begin having a family, the pieces can be combined into a single large unit. They selected an armoire, which is not only a handsome focal point on one wall, but is wonderfully practical as well. Its ample drawers hold all their table linens, silver and serving pieces, and it provides a perfect place for their television set, making it easy to view when wanted and out-of-sight when not. Their future plans call for moving it into a master bed room someday, but in the meantime it's earning its way twice over in the living room. A trunk in the same style gives still more storage space. Its top is divided and slides open for access to the things stowed away .inside. The trunk has become such a favorite that they can't quite decide whether its future will be in an entrance hall or in the living or bedroom. Although they have cre ated a casual look in the de- cdr, both of the owners are partial to Oriental, especially Japanese, design. They feel that, as they acquire Far Eastern accessories and other treasures, the wicker texture and the leafy up holstery fabric "with its rich earth tones will adapt equally well to that style. For this couple, at least, good planning appears to have paid good dividends.
