On the day of the eclipse the Adler Planetarium will present a special "Eclipse Watch" program for people who want to observe the partial eclipse which will be visible from Chicago. According to Associate Astronomer Larry Ciupik of the Adler Planetarium, "the total eclipse will be visible in a 175- mile wide band stretching from Washington and Oregon to the interior of Greenland." "Although the eclipse will not be total here in Chicago," Ciupik said, "we will ex perience an 80 percent eclipse, which should be very exciting, even if there is a light cloud cover." In Chicago the partial eclipse will begin at 9:37 a.m. reaching its maximum at 10:53 a.m. and ending at 12:12 p.m. As the eclipse progresses it will ap pear that the moon is taking a "big bite" out of the sun. At the tiipe of maximum eclipse the sky may also seem to be darker. Ciupik explained that a solar eclipse occurs when the new moon passes between the earth and sun blocking the sun from veiw. During an eclipse the moon's cone-shaped shadow sweeps across the earth. People within this shadow will be able to see the eclipse. Since the moon's shadow is never more than 200 miles wide, the part of the earth in the path of the moving shadow is very small. "In fact," Ciupik said, "from any given spot on earth a total ecMpse will be visible only about once every 300 years." The next total eclipse to pass near Chicago will occur on Aug. 21, 2017. Ciupik issued a strong warning to Chicagoans who want to watch the partial eclipse. "Looking directly at the sun is extremely dangerous and can result in blindness," he said. "People who observe the eclipse should absolutely not look right at the sun at any time during the eclipse, either with the naked eye or through binoculars or a telescope. The safest way to observe an eclipse is indirectly. "Many people have the mistaken impression that they can safely view the sun through dark glasses, welder's masks, smoked glass, exposed film, and the like - but none of these is safe because invisible ultra violet and infrared light from the sun can penetrate these devices and cause blindness. "Since the retina of the eye has no pain sensors, a person can suffer major damage to his eyes without feeling any warning signs. "Professional astronomers use specially prepared, scientifically tested materials for their observations - but even these must be used with caution," Ciupik said. For people who cannot attend the Planetarium's "Eclipse Watch" Ciupik suggested viewing the eclipse through a pinhole projector. "It's a very simple device which anyone can make. All you need is a long cardboard box, a small piece of alum- ninum foil and a piece of white paper. Cut a small hole in one end of the box. Cover the hole with aluminum foil and poke a pinhole in the foil. Inside the box on the end opposite the pinhole, tape a piece of white paper to serve as a veiwing screen. To watch the eclipse, Assist Hospital Mpnagement People experienced in hospital administration are assiting the Memorial hospital board of directors with the management of the hospital at Woodstock while the search is on for a new executive director, Farlin Caufield, president, said this week. A t h r e e - m e m b e r management team has been employed on a scheduled part- time basis. In addition, one of the team members is on-call at all times. The three people comprise the administrative staff of the Good Shepherd hospital under construction near Barrington on Route 22. turn the box so the pinhole faces the sun, then hold the box above your head, with your back to the sun, and observe the image on the white paper 1 "With a pinhole projector people will be able to watch the eclipse in complete safety." That 166-bed hospital is scheduled for occupancy in October so the three people are available for an interim period, Caufield explained. The three include William Sittler, administrator; and Ruth Ponticell and Daryl Schlei, assistant ad- minstrators Caufield said the Memorial hospital board has hired an executive recruiting firm, Lepinot Associates of East Lansing, Mich., to seek can didates for executive director. The board will interview the final candidates recommended by Lepinot associates. The position has been vacant since Bert Hanson resigned at the end of December. * • • • Crime may be all wrong but political influ ence in this country de pends upon the votes you control. • • • • Borrowing money to tide you over an emer gency is one sure way of insuring yourself another emergency.
