N. OF FOX LAKE 4 FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 21, 1929) The public hearing for special assessment for the improvement necessary for repairs to McHenry's sewage purifications plant and outlet lines, which was set for hearing before Judge Allen in the McHenry county court Feb. 14, was postponed to Feb. 23. The McHenry county basketball tournament, with eight teams competing, opened at the Crystal Lake high school gym with McHenry in charge of the program. Hebron won the first game from Huntley by the score of 28 to 12. The second game of the evening was a hard fought one between two of the county's strongest teams, Woodstock and Harvard, the game ending with a win for Woodstock by 26 to 12. Circuit court room fans, who assembled to hear either the Bubbling Over or Pabst case, were disappointed when it was learned that neither case would go to trial that day. FORTY YEARS AGO * (Taken from the files of March 2, 1939) A new store will open its doors to serve the people of this community and vicinity. Maurice Gladstone. proprietor of a large depatment store in Riverside, 111., for the past fifteen years, has opened a general dry goods store in the building on Green street for merly occupied by the Bell Telephone company. Mr. Gladstone will carry a com plete assortment of standard advertised lines at reasonable prices. This includes notions, dry goods, baby good, men's furnishings, ladies' ready-to- wear, work clothes, shoes and hose. Miss Viola Mongeau, who has been a valued employee for the past ten years, will also assist with the work here. A tax lien was filed in the Circuit court of McHenry county against William R. Skidmore and his wife, Ethel, for unpaid income taxes for the years of 1933, 1934 and 1935 amounting to $178,753.42. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 25, 1954) The largest vote ever cast at Harrison school occurred when 505 persons made their decision concerning a new new school. A total of 299 persons indicated that they wanted a new school to be built. There were 154 who voted against the proposition. A total of 273 voted "yes" for the $155,000 bond issue for the building of such a school and 209 voted against it. McHenry Council No. 1288, Knights of Columbus, will participate in the exem plification of the first and second degrees of their order at St. Bede's church, Fox Lake. The McHenry mat team, led by Gene Hughes, turned in a fine performance at the sec tional tournament at Elgin. Hughes, top-seeded in the 120- pound class, showed up with a cracked bone in his hand and went through the tournament with his hand immobilized with tape. He won his first match against DeVor of York 6 to 0 and then downed Bailleaux of Elgin by the same score. In the final match against Smith of Oswego, he wrestled two and a half rounds unable to see out of one eye after catching one of Smith's fingers in it. There is no doubt that Gene finished and won "the match by displaying tremendous courage and determination. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files February 21, 1969) At a special meeting of the McHenry Chamber of Com merce board, progress reports were heard on the current membership drive. To date, fifty members have be signed up for 1969, with a collection of $4,000. The campaign will continue through March 4.
