But if a pregnancy does occur they can im mediately obtain a mis-match shot for the pet to abort the pregnancy if caught early enough. Or, if pregnancy is suspected the pet can be spayed, once again if caught early enough. But what if these measures aren't taken? Has the owner stopped to consider if bonafide homes can be found for each one in the litter? Some owners turn to Helping Paws for assistance in this dilemna. But others find the^basic and limited rules laid down for adoptions by any worthwhile animal welfare agency too much red tape. However, these rules had to be formulated to protect the animal. After a while with no success at finding homes the owners may note an ad that is not uncommon offering to find good homes for unwanted puppies and kittens. HP urges owners to beware of these ads and ignore them if they do not want their litters sold to research facilities where the death they suffer is agonizing. Although this practice is against every humane principle and ethic, it is nevertheless legal. Apply a little logic to the situation it would seem owners ought to realize that if humane societies, with their carefully devised programs, have dif ficulty finding homes, such offers cannot be taken at face value. Owners can seek help from Helping Paws, Animal Control, or the South Elgin shelter, each with different programs, but the end result for the animal will not then be torturous. HP has documented proof obtained from the Illinois Federal Register that a licensed research facility located outside McHenry county, but bordering to the east, is run by a doctor who claims the animals will be adopted when instead their blood is slowly drained (a very painful way to die), and sold for a profit. His only infraction of the law is misleading those who think their pets will be going to homes. A piece of equipment in the HP office has broken down ELECTRICAL SUPPLY CO. Most youngsters are started on their preventive medicine route at around two months of age with immuniza tions against four different childhood diseases. Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough), known as DPT, is given in one dose combining all three at age two months up to the seventh birthday, says an immunization pamphlet from the American Medical Association. Usually three doses are administered, at age 2, 4 and 6 months, with a fourth dose at 18 months. Boos ter doses are recommended for children at 4 to 6 years, with one DPT injection before entering do it right away. Time is their worst enemy. Diphtheria is still a threat to the unvaccinated, and can result in paralysis, heart failure or death. Whooping cough continues to occur in the unvaccinated, especially infants less than a year old. Untreated, it can cause brain damage. A person without tetanus immunization can become se riously ill if the spores get into a puncture wound. Physicians recommend booster shots every ten years throughout the life span. The Sabin oral vaccine against polio is administered by mouth on a lump of sugar or in sweet liquid. It is given in two doses, at 2 and 4 months of age, with another dose at 18 months and a booster before entry to school. Adults subject to un usual risk of polio should re ceive two doses of Sabin oral vaccine. 6 tQ 8 weeks apart, fol lowed by a third dose.in eight to 12 months. Routine immuniza tion of adults in the United States is not recommended. She Can Many a woman who can't add can certainly distract. -Tribune, Chicago. Tax Crack.
