PAGE 8 -Y'L MNDEALER - WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7, 1979 Town-Country Tips by Dovid Plochar, Extaniloo Service 338-3737 • 333-4747 1*77 Yield* - Preliminary 1978 corn yields for McHenry county have surpassed past year's production. Illinois Cooperative Crop Reporting service figures show 123,800 acres of corn in our county producing an average of 104.8 bushels-acre. This is a total production of nearly 13 million bushels. Another 10,000 acres of corn goes into silage production for livestock. Soybean yields dropped some since 1977's 35.9 bushels-acre. 1978 preliminary yields for our county are 30.9 bushel on 46,500 acres. This is a total production of nearly 1.5 million bushels. Crops Use Land Majority • Over 50 percent of McHenry county land is in active crop production. Jim Lucas, County A.S.C.S. Director and I have figured that 205,000 of the 390,500 acres making up our county land area are used for corn, soybean, and small grain production. The remaining acres considered farm land are used for pasture and hay production for livestock. Some acreage is in timber and lowland areas. Winter Home Pests - On warm, sunny winter days, many household pests emerge from their winter nests to invade homes. According to Gary Braness, University of Illinois Entomologist, with clover mites and cluster flies can become serious household pests. Clover mites are tiny-smaller than a pin head-*nd orange to black in color. The mites pass the winter protected under tree bark, in foundation cracks and crevices or between building walls. When the sun warms their hiding places, the mites become active and may migrate in great numbers to window sills and walls. Ouster flies look like house flies but are slightly larger. In fall, the flies search for protected sites to pass the winter. They enter buildings under or around shingles, eaves, window casements and doors. Often flies gather in basements or attics because those areas usually are poorly sealed and easily accessible. On warm, sunny days the flies become active and leave their protected sites to congregate in large numbers at windows. They're commonly found between the inner win dow and storm window. Cluster flies are a common nuisance in buildings but afc- cording to Braness they harm neither people nor materials. However, an accumulation of dead cluster flies in the attic or other areas can lead to further insect problems. For example, carpet beetles and larder beetles feed on dead cluster flies. Pest Control - Indoors, eliminate clover mites by picking them up in a vacuum cleaner or use an insecticide \ reWfl'll Automotive values. 20-25%off. Our finest "78" series bias-ply. Direct the spray at window sills or other areas where the mites congretate. The most effective way to control cluster flies is to keep them out of your house. Seal cracks around windows, eaves and siding to prevent flies from entering. Seal attic openings if possible. Since you cannot prevent any that may be there now, use 20-percent dichlorvos (DDVP).resin strips indoors-in the attic, basement or other rooms where flies gather One strip per 1,000 cubic feet is effective for about four to six weeks. As an alternative to resin strips, is a ready-to-use spray of 0.1 percent pyrethrin. Repeat treatments are necessary because pyrethrin provides little or no residual protection. Whatever you do follow all instructions outlined on the insecticide label. New Cattle Breed - Farm land is decreasing and population increasing. Farmers have an even greater burden placed on their broad shoulders, but technology and research is helping. A new breed of cattle (there are now some sixty recognized breeds in the world) is being developed at the University of Minnesota's Rosemount Ex periment station. After 18 years of work they have come up with red and white animals with milking ability close to that of Holstein's, plus the carcass quality of beef animals. I don't think you'll see any of these cattle grazing in McHenry county this summer, but with some more progress and an increasing demand for food, the future will bring many changes.
