The tournament began several weeks ago with ap proximately sixty Catholic grammar schools competing for the Diocesan championship. The Final Four teams ad vanced from the Freeport. Rockford, Aurora and Elgin sectionals. Marian Central High School in Woodstock hosted the tournament finals which in cluded some of the finest grammar school basketball teams in the State of Illinois. The Montini victories mark the First Rockford Diocesan Championship in the history of the school. Records indicate that the last Catholic school from McHenry to claim the Diocesan crown was ap proximately 20 years ago. Montini advanced to the Final Four of the Tournament of Champions through the Elgin Sectional. In the opening game of the Final round, Montini drew Dixon Catholic, champs of the Freeport Sectional. The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead which it never relinquished. Montini won by a score of 50- 45. Jim Leon was the scoring hero with 19 points, all of which came from long range. Mark Thompson added 14 points and Tim Truckenbrod scored 7 points. Ed Kennedy, defensive star of the Mustangs turned in a fine hustling performance. Bill Herrmann led the Montini offensive attack with precision passes to his teammates for easy baskets. In the Championship game of the Diocese, Montini faced a big strong team from Aurora, St. Nicholas. The Mustangs held off a late St. Nicholas rally to win by a score of 54 to 51. The game was very phsyical around the basket, with both teams battling ferociously under the boards. Bill Herr mann led the Montini charge with 22 points. Tim Truckenbrod played his finest game of the season. Truckenbrod contributed 13 points and controlled the St. Nicholas star player throughout the contest. Steve Aim and Gary Freund provided excellent support from the bench for the Mustangs. Jim Leon iced the Championship for Montini with superb ballhandling and passing in the final minutes of the game. The two victories extended the Champs' record to 30 wins against 4 losses. Montini supports one of the finest basketball won-loss records in the state. Other members of the Montini Championship team who provided excellent support throughout the season are Jeff Gies, Jeff Smith, Kevin Plautz, John Zabielski, John Wegener Tom Wember. and student assistant coach Chris Aim By Randy Swikle Team captain Scott Dixon held the trophy very high so that all the Johnsburg fans could see it. It was the third championship trophy the 1978- 79 Skyhawks have won to date. Johnsburg defeated the Harvard Hornets 62-48 Friday to win the Regional crown and a trip to the Oregon Sectional where the Skyhawks will meet Marengo Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Marengo advanced " to the Sectional after defeating Elgin St. Edward 69-53 in ttie Kirkland Hiawatha Regional. The Regional victory marked the third time the first-year Skyhawks have brought home a first place trophy this season.. The Skyhawks were also champions of the eight-team Northern Illinois Classic Tournament in December and of the Shark Conference. Johnsburg now has a 22-5 record and is riding high on an eight-game winning streak. Harvard managed a slim lead through much of the first quarter, but 18-foot jump shots by Johnsburg guards Kerry Christy and Brett Zimbrick and a beautiful 10-foot hook shot by senior Don Bentz put the Skyhawks at a 12-10 advantage at the end of the first period. The Hornets went into a press during the second quarter, but it proved to be less than effective. With three minutes remaining. Harvard's Don Nolen sank a 15- footer which gave his team a 20- 19 point edge. It was the last time the Hornets held the lead. Skyhawk center Tom Sehoenig hit from 12 feet and Scott Dixon netted two free th rows and an 18 foot shot from the corner. A free throw by Kurt Valentin ended the Johnsburg scoring effort the first half and gave the Skyhawks a 26-23 margin over Harvard. Johnsburg jumped into a more comfortable lead early in the third period with two baskets bv Scott Dixon and one by Sehoenig. Roger Nolen cut into the Johnsburg margin with two quick baskets from un derneath, and his teammate Marc Lawrence also discovered the net. But Johnsburg regained the momentum when junior guard- forward Chris Dixon scored as he was fouled and then netted the free throw. Sehoenig broke up the Harvard offense and initiated a fast break that saw the ball traveling from him tb Scott Dixon to Don Bentz for an easy bucket from under. Johnsburg owned the 43-38 lead at the end of the quarter. With the Skyhawks enjoying the lead in the final period, the team could be very selective on offense. Zimbrick hit two long jump shots and scored on a drive to pace the Skyhawks from the field. In the fourth quarter Johnsburg scored on six of eight attempts from the field and netted seven of eleven free throws to earn its 62-48 victory. Scott Dixon was the game's leading scorer with 16 points. Bentz was* the only other Skyhawk to score in the double figures with 14 for the night. Sehoenig outjumped his taller Harvard opponent at the beginning of each period to give Johnsburg four jump balls, and senior Lenny Pecucci, who hit both of his free throw attempts, was praised by Skyhawk coach Bob Kies for a fine defensive effort. The Johnsburg defense caused the Hornets to commit twice as many turnovers as the Skyhawks during the evening. Johnsburg hit 61 percent .from the field compared to Har vard's 41 percent. Tonight's match between Johnsburg and Marengo will be the third time the two teams have clashed this season. Marengo, which took second place in the Shark Conference, is the only Class A school which has defeated Johnsburg. The Indians won by a three- point edge on their own court in January, but a much improved Skyhawk team avenged that game--also by a three-point margin- when Marengo visited Johnsburg last month. Zeller, a senior forward, was the spark plug of the Warriors the past season. Tim in addition to his scoring and rebounding was generally given the task of guarding the opponents high scorer. In this he did a commendable job. Just last Friday night he held the Tiger's high scoring forward Tom Pence to a mere three baskets, which was a deciding factor in the Warrior victory.
