McHenry's third-Saturday- of-every-month recycling drive for newspapers, glass, cans, aluminum, corrugated card board, magazines, and used motor oil will be held Saturday, March 17 from 9 to 5 in its usual location, the southeast corner of the McHenry Market Place parking lot. Eighth graders, parents, and teachers from Montini Middle school will be working along with the McHenry County Defenders this month. They will be on hand to move recyclable material along the route to being reclaimed and used again. In McHenry alone, in 1978, there were over 400 tons of WHAT S NEW newspapers recycled through various recycling drives In addition, there were over 31 tons of glass, 7 tons of steel cans, and 34 ton of aluminum collected at the regular mon thly recycling drive Through the efforts of McHenry citizens, the recycling of this material has saved precious space in landfills, and has conserved a great many natural resources Tentative results from a survey carried on at the January recycling drive show that each person represented by paper being brought to the drive is recycling 32 lbs. of paper a month, a total of 384 lbs annually When the paper brought to all the drives carried on in McHenry county in 1978 is totaled, it is found there were 1.178 tons of paper generated through the 13 recycling projects This figure, divided by the 1978 estimated county populationg of 140,455 shows that less that 17 lbs of paper per capita per year is being recycled. Compare this with the 384 lbs. per year recycled among recyclers and one is made aware of the vast quantities of paper that are noC* being reclaimed The majority^* of this ends up in landfill, where J space is becoming a premium !• Anyone wishing to become part of the recycling project in% McHenry, is reminded that the* third Saturday of every month!* is put aside as the day to bring' • recyclable materials to the^ McHenry Market Place from 9.* to 5 Any questions or calls.* regarding pickups please;* contact the McHenry County;!
