PAGE II - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14, l»7» k Wonder Lake Anne Sowers 653-9549 Evening Services Held For Lent At Nativity Lutheran In order to bring more meaning into the Lenten season. Nativity Lutheran church is having evening Lenten services at 7:30 p.m. each Wednesday. The theme will be the "Seven Last Words of Jesus". Everyone is invited to come and worship together. Another opportunity for growth is involvement in the Wednesday Bible study star ting at 9:30 a m. They are using a self-study guide on the Book of Hebrews. So far, the background of the book has been discussed, and now they are approaching a general overview or survey of the book before discussing each part in detail. Baby sitting is available at the church during this time. A roller skating party is being planned for Monday, March 19, from 7-9 p.m. at the McHenry Roller Rink. Tickets will be available following both worship services Sunday morning. Nativity now has the beginning of an Evangelism committee. Their primary function will be to maintain a healthy rapport with both new and old members. More help and input is needed, since there are only two members at the present time. If you would consider being a member of the committee, contact either Bud Detwiler at 653-6507, or Katie Anderson at 653-4646. Today, March 14, is the wedding anniversary of Ron and Carol Krumsee. NEW GIRL SCOUT TROOP Several months ago, I mentioned that the Brownies and the Girl Scouts were having trouble finding leaders. Two women came to the rescue and took over the Brownie Troop. Now some help has come for the Girl Scouts also. A Junior Girl Scout Troop has now been started. It is Troop 416 including fourth and fifth grade girls, and meets every Monday from 3-4:30 p.m. at the Greenwood school gym. It is open to both east and west side girls. If you would like further information, call Cheri Wright at 385-0069. ELECT OFFICERS At the March 7 meeting of the Young at Hearts, both the president, Marie Robinson and treasurer, Betsy Smith, were reelected. Marie Robinson had previously resigned and the club has been meeting without official leadership. Now the club members convinced Mrs. Robinson that they need her excellent guidance, so she happily consented to take on the job again. After the election, the members enjoyed the desserts that were supplied by Louise Marke, Marie Robinson and Elmira Simone. Plans are now being made to celebrate the twelfth an niversary of the club's existence. It will be celebrated on April 18, hopefully with the members attending a dinner at one of the local restaurants. The plans will be finalized at the next meeting, which will be March 21 at 11 a.m., at Christ the King church hall. SINGING IN SPRING We often hear the saying "ringing in the New Year", but on March 19, the Wonder Lake Senior Citizens plan to "sing in spring time". They have planned a sing-along to hurry the approaching good weather. Blood pressure screening will take place from 11:30-12:30, with the regular meeting beginning at 1 p.m. The highlight of the meeting will be the election of officers, who will hold office from April 1, 1979 until April 1, 1980. Meetings are always held at Nativity Lutheran church. SPEEDY RECOVERY Len Spencer will be ruling his household from his easy chair for several weeks. He un derwent knee surgery on March 9, and will have a period of recovery at home. f Len had to have the surgery done now so that his recovery would be complete by the time baseball season rolls around. It would be difficult managing the Wonder Lake Teener league S without being in good shape! SPECIAL DAYS Danny Hayes of Highland Shores will be celebrating his seventh birthday on March 16. Danny is a first grader at Greenwood school. Even though Dora Gill is not Irish, all those of Irish heritage celebrate along with her on her birghday, March 17. Maybe she will be taken out for a corned beef and cabbage dinner! Happy St. Patrick's day to all of us Irish folk on March 17, and happy St. Joseph's day to all < those of Italian and Polish ancestry on March 19. Basically, it means that all police departments have set areas that they patrol and respond to calls in, and, unless they are asked by a neigh boring department to assist, they do not patrol areas outside their jurisdiction. The obvious exceptions to jurisdiction are another department's request for help on a call, a chase that starts within your jurisdiction and proceeds to another's area, and so on: Where this becomes hard to understand is when a citizen calls the city of McHenry police department, and asks for help in some problem. The dispatcher will ask the caller who he is, where he lives, the phone number, and what is wrong. The problem arises in the citizen's mind when he is told that he doesn't live within the corporate limits of the city of McHenry, and that he will have to call the Sheriff's department for his problem. It is hard to explain over the phone, when the person is upset or excited, and usually getting irate, that just because he has a McHenry mailing address, that he doesn't live within the city limits and the McHenry police department doesn't answer calls outside our area. Unless the caller has an emergency, such as an accident, a fight, etc., the caller will be told to call the Sheriff's department, if it is their area, or his local police department. Obviously, if it is an emergency, and he has called the wrong depart ment, we will take the in formation, and we will im mediately call the appropriate police agency and relay the information to them. There are numerous small towns in the county of McHenry that do not have their own local police departments, and they are served by the McHenry county Sheriff's department. Within the county limits, there are larger towns that have their own local departments, such as Crystal Lake, Woodstock, McHenry, Marengo, and so on. All of those larger departments have full time police depart ments, that have police officers on duty twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, all year long. Also, there are towns that are growing larger all the time, and they have their own police departments too; however, they may be only part-time stations. Whenever their of- "Erin Go Bragh" ST. But, when they do not have an officer on duty, their calls are answered by the McHenry county Sheriff's department. Examples of this are McCullom Lake, Sun- nyside, McHenry Shores, Sunrise Ridge, Lake-in-the- Hills, etc. As these towns grow larger, they will also have full time police departments. When they start being full time is deter mined by the city council, and also by state law. Usually, when a town has a certain number of residents, and there are other factors that come into play, state law says that they have to have a full time police department. The city council may start a full time force sooner, at their discretlbn, if they feel that it is necessary. The city of McHenry is constantly growing, and with that growth, comes the need for the police department to grow, and take on the responsibility of that added area to protect the people, and the property of those people. When an area is brought into the city, or in corporated into the city, it not only gets the sewer and water hook-ups, and all the other advantages of being a part of a city, it gets the police depart ment, too. As the city grows, we take on the added problems that always come with growth, and we try to grow ourselves to make our, YOUR department, better. In the past few years, we have enlarged our police station; upgraded our radio system to become more powerful, because of the added area that we must patrol and the fact that we dispatch for other police departments, rescue squad, and all three fire departments; added a detec tive division; and have sent many of the officers to special schools at the Police Training institute in Champaign and the Chicago Police academy and other schools to upgrade our knowledge and expertise as ^police officers. We in the city of McHenry police department, feel that we are one of the best police departments in the county, and we hope that you, the people of McHenry, feel the same way. We have grown in the past, just as the city has grown, and we will continue to grow and become better in the future, to better serve you, the people of McHenry.
