Barnett lead the charge «£th 12 points. Chris Dixon was the only Skyhawk to score twice in the period as he netted four points. "We couldn't do anything on offense at the end," the Skyhawk coach commented. "The difference i|i free throws amounts to dnly 14 points," he continued; "but it sure dictates whafyou can do." Turnovers in the fourth quarter also added to the Johnsburg demise. Ejurly in the period, the Skynawks lost the ball four c/nsecutive times without /taking a shot. Oregon took the ball and scored each time at , their own end. Oregon shot 19 free throws in the final quarter, making 13. Oregon made 53 percent of its shots during the game, scoring on 29 of 55 tries. Johnsburg 's shooting improved some in the second half and they finished the game making 24 of 58 for 41 percent. "I just wish they hadn't taken it away from the kids," Kies said. "If they're better, they'll beat us. They didn't need any help." "Our fans showed alot of class down there," he con tinued, "and it sure made the kids feel better. They were really behind us." Johnsburg was also ham- Dered because substitute Brett •Zimbrick wasn't feeling well. Zimbrick, who had come off the bench several times during the season to lead the team in scoring, had'been sick all day Friday and was held scoreless in the game. Warrior Frosh Close Out Season With Win SPOUTS Warrior Thindads 4th In Invitational Every year at this time NIU at DeKalb holds an Invitational track meet in Evans Fieldhouse for schools that do not have indoor facilities Last Saturday. Coach Dan Boland took some of his thin- dads to the meet and they wound up in 4th place in the eight school meet. The Warriors finished behind St Charles. Kaneland and DeKalb Chris Nowell led the locals when he won the 60 yd. low- hurdles. finished 2nd in the 60 highs and picked up another 3rd place when he went 6'2" in the high jump, a remarkable feat, when you consider he had not practiced in that event. Dan Schaeffer picked up a 3rd in the 60 yd. dash. Boland like many others, is waiting for the thaw, so that he can get his team outside and prepare for the coming season Dennis DeJa's second free throw on a two shot foul, with no time left on the clock enabled the McHenry Fresh man basketball team to defeat Crystal Lake Central 44 to 43. They gave it everything they had." Johnsburg Skyhawk coach Bob Kies had plenty of reason to be proud of his team, despite the fact they lost 74-50 Friday night to the host school in the finals of the Class A sectional tournament at Oregon . < The Skyhawks finished with a 23-6 record, a remarkable achievement, considering the fact the school is in its first year of existence. But Friday night, the state- ranked Oregon Hawks were too much for Johnsburg. "They are a good team," commented Kies "and they are well coached. The players and I feel they would probably be able to beat us nine out of ten times." he continued, "but." he emphasized, "they aren't twenty points better." "This might sound like sour grapes, but it's hard to believe the difference in fouls." Kies explained The Hawks made 16 of 24 free throws in the game, while Johnsburg converted the only two free throws it shot in the game. "Everytime we breathed on them it was a foul." Kies criticized. "And our offense was greatly limited because the officials allowed thtffri to hack." Johnsburg enjoyed its only lead of the game early in the game when they were ahead 12- 8-in the first quarter. A very questionable offensive foul called on Don Bentz late in the quarter sealed the fate for Johnsburg Oregon rallied and ended the quarter leading by two, 14-12. Oregon made 6 of 14 shots in the quarter, while the Skyhawks shot a cold 6 for 16. And the visitors shooting didn't get much better during the game. In the second quarter, the taller Oregon team (three players6'5" or better > extended their lead. After only 49 seconds of the quarter. Kies was forced to call a time out as the Hawks had increased their lead to 19-12. Oregon increased its lead to eleven during the period, and at the half lead 33-24. Scott Dixon led Johnsburg at the half with 8 points while Bentz had scored 6 points and two free throws, the only two his team was to shoot the entire evening Fred Bocker paced Oregon with 10 points, while All-state candidate Bob Bamett had 6 points Johnsburg shot a dismal 37 percent the first half, netting 11 of 30 shots while Oregon made half of their 30 shots The third quarter saw Johnsburg stage a comeback. Relying heavily on the inside scoring of 240-lb Bentz. the Skyhawks narrowed the lead to 5 at 47-42 at the end of the quarter. "We never had a shot in the fourth quarter." Kies ex plained "When it came to the fourth quarter." he added, "we were done." as he commented on the fact that Oregon shot 19 free throws in the final period. "I'm not saying that fouls called against us weren't fouls." he said. "But there is no way that their team only committed nine fouls in that entire game." The second half Friday night was only the second time all year Johnsburg didn't shoot a free throw in a half. On Dec. 19 against Rich mond. Johnsburg didn't shoot a free throw the first half. But in the second half they shot nineteen free throws in their easy win. "You could check the scorebook on every game played in the state throughout the year." Kies reported, "and I bet there wouldn't be many times when one team only shot two free throws in an entire game." Chns Dixon grabs a rebound during action in Fridav night's sectional Ult.
