The Defenders' entry into the used oil recovery follows a pilot program begun in DesPlaines, Glen Ellyn and Naperville in 1977 by the niinois Institute of Energy and En vironmental Resources. After motor oil has been used, it can be re-refined, yielding oil that can be of the same quality as virgin oil or it can be reprocessed for use as a fuel oil or in other products. The potential for used oil recycling is vast, according to research results done by the State of Illinois Department of Energy. In Illinois, an estimated 190 miUion gaUons of oil were sold during 1977. About half of this total is lost through leaks, thrown out with discarded parts or is burned up in use. Of the remaining 95 million gallons about 45 millon gallons are currently recycled by industrial oil users and auto fleet companies, leaving a sizable quantity unrecovered. It is estimated that of this total, do-it-yourself oil changers dispose of approximately 12 million gallons of oil in en vironmentally unsound ways. According to Don Eastep, coordinator of the State of Illinois used oil program, it requires less energy to reprocess or re-refine oil than it does to make the original oil product, so recycling also saves energy. The re-refining process reclaims from 60 to 70 percent of the volume of used oil en tering a plant. "This means that for every 2 gallons of used oil that is re-refined, we can recover close to V/z gallons of reusable oil, and for every volume of oil recovered, an equal volume does not have to be distilled from new petroleum," said Eastep. The program hopes to en courage do-it-yourself oil changers to bring their used oil to the recycling drive. Residents should drain their used oil into a suitable con tainer, such as plastic milk jug or other non breakable con tainer which can be sealed tightly. The recovered oil should not be mixed with other liquids. OU will now be accepted at the McHenry, Crystal Lake and Harvard recycling drives, and anytime at the U-Rent-All, 5005 Northwest Highway, Crystal Lake. In addition, a committee of the McHenry County Defenders is in the » process of setting up drop-off outlets at service stations and other locations throughout the county. This Saturday, March 17, is the regular monthly recycling drive for McHenry. Montini eighth graders will be on hand to help unload bundled papers, clean glass with ail metal and plastic removed, clean flat tened steel cans, clean all- aluminum products, and gallons of used motor oil. Citizens are asked to bring their properly prepared materials to the McHenry Market Place between 9 and 5. Anyone having questions or in need of a pick-up should contact Mrs. Wm. (Alice) Howenstine by Friday evening or cali Montini Middle school.
