Boating Safety Classes Offered Boaters: a boating safety course may save your life, according to statistics com piled by the Illinois Depart ment of Conservitfion. Between thWyiars 1974 and 1978, boat registrations in the state of Illinois climbed from 212,603 to 251,432. During the same period of time the number of fatalities suffered annually in boating accidents gradually dropped from 69 to 1973 to 22 deaths in 1978. One reason for the improved safety record, said Department of Conservation Police Chief William Brey, is an increased emphasis on boating safety classes. Since January, 1978, boaters between the ages of 12 and 17 have been required to take the state's boating safety course before being allowed to pilot a motorboat without an adult on board. Children between the ages of 10 and 12 must always have an adult on board when operating a motorboat and children under the age of 10 are prohibited from operating a motorboat. Persons who want to take the boat safety course should make arrangements to do so now, before the boating season gets in full swing, Brey noted. The courses are taught by unpaid volunteers certified by the state. A small fee may be charged to cover rental of a hall in which courses are held. Those wishing to take the course in the Chicago area should contact the boat safety inspector for their county. The boat safety inspectors are: McHenry County: Arthur and Jeannette Remus at 832-1525 after 3 p.m. Boating Safety classes are now mandatory for teenagers in Illinois before they are allowed to operate a motorboat without an adult on board. All three winners are seniors. PLAINDEALER STAFF PHOTOS EARL WALSH" So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR Returning to McHenry from the sunshine of Sarasota had me humming "Back In The Saddle Again". Then came a fall from the saddle. A leg injury the last day of vacation caught up and has me out of circulation. One must be consoled by the fact that we young athletes are put on the disabled list at times. With the Alex Justens and Ed Smiths, we had a good chat with Chuck Hiller when his Kansas City Royals came to Sarasota. "All the way down to Florida to see Chuck Hiller", was my remark. Says Chuck, "You did like hell! You came down to see the White Sox". Yep, We saw the Sox and talked to Bill Veeck. Bill was looking at those big sluggers on the Pittsburg Pirates team and must have been thinking how nice they would look in Sox uniforms. Dr. Wilt said, "Give us your opinion on the White Sox". The Sox need a couple of big men who can whack the ball for distance They have speed. Wow! Their outfielders can go get 'em. Very fast. The infield was changed each day so time will tell. Harry Chappas, all 5'3" of him, was the crowd pleaser. He hit good and fielded flawlessly. Men coming into second base give him a problem. Some slid hard to take him out of the double play. Other runners came in high to make him throw over their heads. Some tough old players would take care of that. The Sox have some young pitchers who look like they are ready for the big time. They also have some older ones who may be on the way out. Wayne Nordhagen, not a catcher by trade, is being used behind the plate a lot this year, after a taste of the job last year. He was an outfielder when they brought him up. Now he is also used some at first base. It's a tip-off that he will stay. Clarence Young warned us about the heavy traffic down there. He was right. Some say it isn't any worse than McHenry, but there is more of it. Found a place to buy a Chicago Tribune, fifty cents daily and a buck and a quarter on Sunday. People always ask where your home is located. After telling everybody that Chicago is 50 miles south of McHenry, we met a nephew of Phil Mangold (former Mayor of Sunnyside) and couldn't use the description on him. He knows our area. A good tip from our Publisher, Larry Lund, to feast at the Harbor House proved a delight,. They specialize in fish dinners with a great variety. 'Twas a beautiful ride along the Gulf coast. People talked a lot about Chicago electing a lady Mayor and most of the fairer sex thought it is time to turn the country over to the women. Tourists are friendly. Met a couple while waiting in a long line at the Raw Oyster Bar and decided to take a table for four. We hit it off good and enjoyed their company during our stay. Thev came down from Vermont where the largest city in the state has a population of 40 thousand. Took a book with us titled "IN NO TIME AT ALL". It was a gift from Judge Roland Herrmann with an inscription (not noticed until we started reading the book) we treasure. Ken Espey and his daughter Marjie came to see us early in our vacation days. I had promised to take Ken out for a lettuce on rye crips sandwich. A real high spot in our trip was a visit with my McHenry High basketball coach, Gordorr Stringer. What a memory! Sharp as a tack. He remembers everybody and recalled many events of the 20's. Coach says he plans to live til he is 100 years old. We have a date to attend that birthday party. Roll out the wheelchairs. We ate at a bountiful smorgasbord one night where the chef said, "Eat that and you-all come back for more. Do you hear?" When we arrived in Sarasota, it was raining and lawn sprinklers were still turned on. They had a dry spell and didn't recognize the rain. Missed our old haunts on St. Patrick's Day. Attended church in the morning where a young Irish priest, who must have just stepped off the boat, said the mass. He finished off with an Irish story. That church had upholstered seats and kneeling benches, but that wasn't enough -- Alvina sat on my hat. It was the first time in years that I didn't have my green cane. Found a restaurant called T.R. Murphy's where I thought they would have corned beef and cabbage. Maybe they did, but it was so crowded you couldn't get a table. Hear tell that some of the home folks had a real shindig at Murphy's Corner in beautiful downtown Volo. While we were away, McHenry lost two of its finest men, Bob Weber and Ray McGee. Families, friends and .communities feel the loss. "Since our "Brenda" has done such a beautiful job in her appraisal of these men, I would be out of order to try to gild the lily. Years went by .and Heaven couldn't wait. It was a pleasure to renew acquaintance with George and Les Kelly, formerly of Chicago. George is a true blue White Sox fan and never misses a game down there. And that peppery wife of his! She is to the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce what "Zeke" is to Tuscon. Just before leaving McHenry, we thoroughly en joyed a sneak preview of "Ah Yes, I Remember It Well" at Crescent Bay Landing. Separately, Sasha and Shirley are great performers. Together, they are super stars. Must catch up on all the local sports news, but this is long enough for a starter. Mail stacked up while we were away. Besides St. Patrick's Day cards, there were two checks, six bills, and seven requests to donate to worthy causes. McHenry School League Palace Bowl 3-21-79 The final curtain has rung down on the 1978-79 bowling season and, as usual, it is met with shouts of joy and moans of disappointment. Comments on the battle for first place are hardly necessary, for those who were there heard and said it all. Things did change a bit, but not too much. Anyway, it's all over except for the banquet and a wards... money, too. To close out the season, the following women made the grade: S. Blume, 191-460; B. Thompson, 183; M. Raasch, 181- 482; K. Lescher (miracle), 162; V. Jenkins, 162; and J. Hamilton, 160. Credits go to the following men: R. Justen, A "Roaring" 221-202 for a 602 series; R. Homo (what a comeback), 206 and 201-536; P. Jenkins, 1%; R. Glawe, 183; G. Hubbard, 182- 488; W. Farrell, 179-527; T. Rome, 179; A. Boeldt, 172-490; and B. Street, 166-470. The Booby Prize goes to a new winner as "Mama' Miller rolled an astounding 28 pins under average for each game. And they said it could't be done. No pizza till next fall and no drinks won, but four people were able to convert some splits. T. Rome wiped off the 5- 8-10, M. Raasch cleared the 6-7, and L. Homo and K. Kescher (that's twice) managed the 5- 10. That's it, except for final standings, till this fall. Hope everyone had a tremendous time and will be back to try it again and maybe set some new records.
