SERVICE NEWS IV. Loreh Receives Diploma In Basic Hull Maintenance Navy hull maintenance technician, Fireman- Ap prentice William S. LorCh, son of Stewart N. and Dorothy R. Lorch of 4903 W. Fountain lane, McHenry, was graduated from Basic Hull Maintenance Technician school. During the 8-week course at the Naval Training center, San Diego, students received in struction on the basics of welding, pipefitting and metalsmithing. They studied the procedures used to fabricate, install and repair all types of shipboard structures, plumbing and piping systems. A 1978 graduate of McHenry Community high school, he joined the Navy in August, 1978. The latest selection, by the media, in which Willie Mays was the only player added, is another of many indictments of the present eligibility rules. Slaughter, like Duke Snider, should have been an overwhelming choice. Year after year he missed. (Had he been a member of a minority group perhaps his chances would have been better*-- because otherwise ugly ac cusations could have been made.) The continuing spectacle of only one player, or two, being voted into the Hall by the media cries for action to change the rules so more great players can be inducted. After all, what's the great harm in a player or two with less-than-the-greatest qualifi cations being voted in? That's better than leaving out deserv ing players-as is done today. Enos Slaughter, not a spring chicken at the time, executed one of the great plays in modern-day baseball when he won the key game of the 1946 World Series with ag gressive, exciting base run ning--going from first to home plate on a single. That doesn't qualify him for Hall of Fame membership. His record does. Had he lived in New York, closer to media exposure, he would not likely have again been overlooked- in has last year of eligibility.
