Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the flies of April 4, 1929) At the City Council meeting, Alderman Bonslett presented a new ordinance on the width and construction for streets in subdivisions within the cor­ porate limits of McHenry. At this point Judge Charles Allen got the mayor's attention and presented a plat for the sub­ division of lots between the McHenry Country club and Elgin road. After some\little discussion Alderman KreUtzer, seconded by Alderman Doherty, moved that the plat of the subdivision be accepted. Roy Kent of Kent and Company presented to the city board for their approval a plot for subdividing the mill pond. It is probable that the dam will be removed and the dredge continued from the Keg and Beller property throughout the entire channel of the pond, making a beautiful stream of water and the subdivision will be constructed with well built roads and sufficient alleys at the rear of the lots with some more bridges across the creek and ought to make a very valuable piece of property. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 13, 1939) Condemnation proceedings were started in the county court by the Department of Public Works and Buildings of the State of Illinois for the purpose of obtaining some acres of land to be used for the rebuilding of a dam and for the construction of a state park in McHenry county. A petition for con­ demnation proceedings was filed against Henry Felmeten, Sr., Ada Felmeten, Cora Herdrich, Henry Felmeten, Jr., and Dora Felmeten, by the Department of Public Works and Buildings for the purpose of obtaining possession of 15.5 acres of marginal land on the east side of Fox river in Nunda township to be used as a state park and game and fish preserve. Easter Sunday dawned bright and clear and although a bit chilly it in no way lessens the joy in the hearts of the people who thronged to the churches to receive their Lord and to show their appreciation and love for the Redemption. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 8, 1954) With a change planned in the police set-up, several ap­ plicants were present at the City Council meeting. The new plan will find the chief and two regular officers working 8-hour shifts on a 7-day schedule. This will eliminate an extra relief man working when the regulars have days off. The regular men will work out their own schedule, working extra hours when one man has a day off. This will permit the Council to hold the budget in hand and still establish a monthly salary comparing favorably with other cities. Seems you just can't keep Spring from making an ap­ pearance when April arrives, regardless of weather. In the midst of last week's deep snow, Mrs. Nettie Weber picked jonquil buds which were peeking through a high bank of fluffy white beside her home. This week, encouraged by temperatures within her home, they are a beautiful mass of blooms. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 2, 1969) Persistent efforts over a long period of time to obtain bridge improvements at Pistakee Bay were rewarded this past week when Assistant Supervisor Charles Weingart, chairman of the Road and Bridge com­ mittee of the county, was in­ formed that a new bridge would be installed. A tentative letting date for bids at Springfield has been set for July 11 for a three- span bridge at a point just west of Regner road. Taxpayers who want to make certain that their tax bills go to the right address are urged to contact the McHenry county treasurer's office as soon as possible. This past year 18 to 19 percent of the real estate bills had address changes. That's some 13,000 changes out of 69,000 real estate bills. H. Walter Anderson of McHenry, executive director of the McHenry County TB association, received a financial report on the Christmas Seal campaign. It showed an increase of 1.9 percent over the previous year for a total of $32,337.51. Art Students Entered In Elgin Competition McHenry County college student Julie Aschliman took first place for design in the seventh annual Community College Student Art exhibition at Elgin Community college. She was one of only four win­ ners in the show in which MCC art students have 18 entries selected. The show, which continues at ECC through April 12, also features works by students from Harper, Oakton, Triton, Joliet, Waubonsee and Elgin Community colleges. Ms. Aschliman, who lives in Crystal Lake, will receive a $50 prize for her prize winning design exhibit titled "Color Theory".
