Merle Johnsen, executive director and secretary. Other officers not pictured are Darwin Kendrick, reelected treasurer, and Rick Bernotas, outgoing president elected second vice-president. Campaign planning for this year's Countywide Fall fund drive is already under way. First Aid For Flooded Honhes (County Department of Health) The recent flooding in McHenry county has not only been destructive to property but poses potential dangers and health hazards to all persons involved. Persons who have had to evacuate their homes temporarily and are preparing to return to their homes should exercise due caution for flood- related hazards. Those who have been affected by flood waters but who remained in their homes during the high water should be aware of the health hazards that may be lurking in their homes. Before entering your house make sure that it is safe and not about to collapse. It would be advisable to have your building inspector check your home for structural soundness before you step inside the door. Let your house air for several minutes to remove foul odors or escaped gas. Do not smoke or use open flame until you are sure that it is safe to do so. On entering, bear in mind, that there may be holes in the floor or loose boards with nails sticking up. After dark use a flashlight to avoid igniting escaped gas. Do not turn on an electrical system; it may have become short-circuited. Turn off gas at meter or tank. Do not. pump out basements too soon or too fast. Structural damage to walls and floors results from pumping out too soon or too fast. The house should be clean and dry before any attempt is made to live in it. The following precautions should be followed: 1. Electrical circuits: Do not turn on lights or appliances until entire electrical system has been checked out by an electrician for short circuits. 2. Chimneys: Any chimney that has been subject to water action should be inspected promptly. Defective chimneys can result in fires and carbon monoxide gas poisonings. 3. Water supplies: Water supplies that have been subject to flooding must be considered contaminated and unsafe to drink. Contact your health department. Boiling water for ten minutes is a positive method by which water can be made bac- teriologically safe to drink. For other methods contact the health department. 4. Plumbing and Sanitation: Swamped sewage disposal installations imperil the health of man and animals in floobed areas. Your health department has trained people to help you. 5. Household mechanical equipment: Have motors for pumps, refrigerators, freezers, ranges, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, food mixers and other equipment checked by an electrician to assure safety before connecting to electric current. 6. Food: Flood waters carry filth and disease bacteria from sewage systems or backed up sewage. Food, drugs, medical supplies or cosmetics that have been covered by flood waters should be discarded. Fresh meats, fruits and vegetables, medicines, and cosmetics that are not in hermetically sealed containers should be destroyed. Destroy contents of crown capped bottles and screw-top glass containers if containers have been covered by flood waters. Before using food from sealed metal cans, contact the health department for disin fecting instructions. 7. Clothing and bedding: Bacteria can remain alive in and on fabrics for long periods. The use of disinfectants in some phase of the laundry cycle is recommended. Mattresses soaked with floodwater are generally damaged beyond use and should be destroyed. 8. Protection against tetanus: Persons with optfn sores or who have been infected with wounds while working in flood waters are cautioned to check with their family physicians. For further assistance in preventing health hazards, contact the McHenry County Department of Health, 2200 North Seminary, Woodstock, 111. 60098. Telephone number 815-338-2040, Extension 120. On the agenda were the following items: NIPC scheduled a meeting April 4, at noon, to consider Stage I of the Sewer project. Our beach is now a licensed bathing beach. Ordinance 12, pertaining to prices and fees of the vehicle stickers,, was read for the second time at a meeting which was held March 16, which no one attended. The Ordinance committee will meet again to consider the recommended changes to this ordinance and these changes will be reflected on the copy of the ordinance in the village hall for inspection by residents. Added note: this ordinance does cover motor cycles. President Lillegard informed the board that she has suc cessfully obtained another grant from CETA to fund a patrol person position, and she stated that our present police secretary would be promoted to patrol person. This position replaces the vacant slot in the maintenance department. Concerning the spreading of gravel, i the following in formation was presented: our village has had to obtain passage permission on town ship roads which are weight posted and we have had to carry minimum load weights. We have only two day passage and we will, therefore, spread as much gravel as possible in that time. Three ex-officio members, newly appointed to the planning commission are George Sebek, Unit 2; Dan Lindgren, Unit 3; and Mrs. Lindsey Scheinert, Unit 1. Further discussion con cerned the status of the village tractor (in need of repair); treasurer's report; Mr. Ehredt, developer \fcas not in, at tendance, therefore, his presentation was not given; Audit bids were opened and submitted to the finance committee for final recom mendation; bids for the audit are now closed; the various standing committees had nothing to report. President Lillegard called for written reports from all chairpersons for year-end reports to be presented at the next board meeting. The next board meeting will be held tonight, April 4, 7 p.m. at the annex. SECTION 2 - PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. APRIL 4,1979 DANGEROUS GAME Whoever is responsible for the tearing down and removing of the stop signs at the in tersection of Hilltop and Biscayne should realize one thing; this is a dangerous game to play. It is dangerous for the automobile driver who may be injured as a result of not stopping at the intersection, and it is equally dangerous for the boneheads who are responsible for the act. Fate delivers us mild set backs or crushing blows: we determine its severity upon our lives. Environmental Conference The Illinois Environmental Protection agency. Illinois Institute of Natural Resources and the Pollution Control board, in cooperation with the United States Environmental Protection agency will co- sponsor the twelfth in a series of conferences on solid waste management. The two-day meeting on May 10-11 in Chicago will cover problems involved in the implementation of the Resource Conservation and Recovery act, including hazardous and non-hazardous materials, landfill siting and resource recovery.
