•s '•PAGE 8 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. APRIL 11.1979 Invite The World Home An unique experience for this next year awaits families in terested in hosting an exchange student through the Youth for Understanding International Student Exchange program. Each year between three and four thousand high school students travel to the U.S. for six months or a year to live with American families and share learning experiences with them. The students are treated as members of the family and are provided with room, board, and the same guidance and love which families give to their own children. Illinois will be welcoming 150 International students to the state this summer and another 60 in January. They, along with approximately 3,500 other international students, are participants in the Youth for Understanding program. They are from 26 countries in Europe, South and Central America, Africa, the Far East, and Australia. Many of the Illinois-boUnd students have been placed in homes throughout the state, but families are still needed to host the remaining students. Sigrid Hagebakken is a 17- year-old girl from Harstad, Norway. She is an excellent student and has studied English for 8 years, German for 4 and French for 2. Her interests include jazz ballet dancing, running, judo, music, and nature. Sigrid feels that she would be happy in almost any CROSSWORD PUZZLE £ SIGRID HAGEBAKKEN part of the state with a close- knit family. She and the other 149 students are anxious to learn more about their host families and new country and to share part of their heritage with their new-found friends. Those interested in more information about Sigrid or who have questions about other students who still need families or on the Youth for Un derstanding program, call Michael Nagle, Illinois director, (collect) at (312) 832- 2177. • » • • It's good that most of us never know what other people think of us. MCC Agriculture Programs Draw From Beyond County McHenry County college's agriculture programs draw students from all over the metropolitan area, not just from McHenry county. A recent survey of students enrolled in the various agriculture programs such as greenhouse management, landscape and nursery management, floral shop management, turfgrass management, agricultural business and agricultural management showed students live in 45 different com munities. While 62 percent are from McHenry county, there are also 9.8 percent living in Cook county, 7 percent living in Lake county, 10.2 percent living in Kane county, 4.2 percent living in Boone county and 6 percent living in Winnebago county. Students come to MCC from Arlington Heights, Elgin, Rockford and St. Charles as well as from local communities in the college district. Fourteen percent of the students studying agriculture at MCC come to the college from Elgin Community college while 9 percent come from Rock Valley Community college. Forty percent of the students are between the ages of 17 and 20 while another 24 percent are between 26 and 35. A continual flow of agriculture students from within and outside McHenry county emphasizes the out standing facilities and staff at MCC," said Don Barrett, coordinator of MCC's Agriculture program. Barrett notes that as well as new greenhouse facilities, MCC has the finest soils laboratory in the state other than the one at the University of Illinois. © csrs Some used to think a hazel twig held in water would squeal l ike a pig.
