My husband forbids me to have Christian literature in our home, and he does not want the children and me to attend church. He's so against God that he removed his wedding ring and said in order for me to be truly married to him I'd have to stand before the church and denounce my faith. After five years of trouble and physical violence I quit going to church in hope of showing him how much he was loved. It has not helped. I believe under all this hostility is one of the finest human beings there could possibly be, but my physical, mental and spiritual health are low and worn. I ask your prayers and comments. A. Of course, to solve this problem you must analyze your husband's life to find the original cause of his anti-God attitude. Having done so, you are then in a position to try to improve his mental attitude. He has no more right to forbid you, his marital equal, to give up your faith than you have to make him have it. Since giving in to him hasn't worked, don't do it any more. Usually we convince people of the value of religion by setting before them a beautiful, happy spirit, the attractiveness of which they cannot resist. We are sending you our booklet called Spirit Lifters, which may be helpful to you. Anyone wishing a free copy may write to us at Box 500, Pawling, NY, 12564. Something deep down Q. I get the feeling that no one loves me or cares what happens to me. I know better. I know/fnjThusband loves me. But there is something deep down that tells me he don't. I have to fight that for days, and then I can't show him any lj)ve at all. I am afraid if I keep this up I will lose him. When youicnow one thing and there is something deep down telling yoi/different it is a hard battle to fight. I have got to have some help. I love my husband and I believe I would kill myself if I lost him. A. That "something deep down" is a prfound insecurity feeling. Of course your husband loves you. Your insecure mental attitude can probably be traced to some childhood experience, and you should get expert counseling help in ascertaining the cause. Then you can face it and deal with it. In the meantime, one thing you can do is constantly tell yourself that you are a very fortunate woman to have such an understanding husband. Also affirm that you will always have your husband's love. Losing control Q. I have been an accountant and income tax man most of my active life, and I really miss the activity of a mind "that used to was and now not is." I am 85 years old and in fairly good physical condition. My mind is not as sharp and retentive as formerly. It's becoming less and less easy to recall things. Twice a day I take 10-minute exercises to concentrate on the head of a pin, which has helped keep my mind fairly well under control. Am wishing for something to stop my gradual retrogression and would appreciate any suggestions. A. Every part of the human body reacts creatively to exercise. This is no less true of your mental equipment than of your physical muscles. Your pin technique is good. In addition, read all the thoughtful material you can find--stuff that is hard reading. Find someone with whom you can have a really intellectual conversation. Keep your mind working, for it does not need to deteriorate. Evei^thing about yourself that you work, will keep on working, including the mind. We like your question and wish you well. BY PATRICK DUDGEON Social Security Young Americans should learn early in life about Social Se curity. More than likely, the first time you go to a Social Security office it will be to get a social security card. But that's just one service of the office. You can also apply for benefits there. There are more than 1,300 social security offices in the U- nited States. Almost every kind of employment and self employ ment is covered by social se curity. * * Social security retirement, survivors and disability benefits are paid for based on covered earnings. If you are employed, the contributions are deducted from your salary and your em ployer pays and equal amount. If you are self-employed, you con tribute a little more than two- thirds the combined employer- employee for retirement, sur vivors, and disability insurance. When a person -- young or old -- applies for disability benefits, the people at the social security office should help you obtain the necessary medical reports. See your local social security office for details on how young people are affected by the system -- and what they should know about it.
