The Phillies may be loaded with talent, but from what we saw this spring the Pittsburg Pirates will be hard to keep from picking up the marbles in the National League this year. The Pirates have awegome power and great pitching. I dunno. They have made some dandies for a starter. And, speaking of the Sox. I seem to stand alone in my belief that the popular Harry Chappas should spend more time in the minors. Hope I'm wrong. Chappas, being the shortest player in the majors, has won his way to the hearts of fans. He will draw crowds. He has shown spunk and ability. I just happen to think another year in the minors would teach him more about playing the im portant position of shortstop. Again I say --- I hope I'm wrong. Wayne Gaylord tells he has enough pictures of opening day at Cub park to fill a whole page. I reminded him of the equal time law. He has to do the same in Comiskey Park. Sports sections I read during vacation made some big stories out of the battle between baseball club owners and female reporters who insisted on their rights to enter the players' locker and shower rooms for interviews. Some players were mighty put out with the gals who in sisted on invading the privacy of male athletes. Some happy- go-lucky ones took the attitudes -- "Oh - what the hell!" One uncomfirmed story intimated that sporting goods stores would be selling over sized towels to the boys. With all the stories kicked around, I didn't read one item about the rights of men reporters entering girls' locker rooms. Old fashioned girls would scream. Maybe the modern girl athlete would simply buy one of those big towels. Prust, If T. Frantz, cf Thomas, lb M. Mroz, dh Glick. ss ab 3 1 2 2 2 McHenry Wauconda Jackson came in 129 of 250 runners. We need to provide quality education within the bounds of •fiscal responsibility. This will require the maximum utilization of our school facilities to meet the need of a growing community. I believe that I can provide a positive approach with creative solutions to these issues. I would appreciate your vote on April 14, 1979. ^ Thank You, iJjL fftcck h Hey, Let Go Cubby! The governor is in a hurry. Illinois Governor Jim Thompson must have an important appointment back in Springfield as he quickly shakes the hand of the Chicago Cub mascot as he leaves his box seat. What was his hurry? Moments later, Plaindealer photographer Wayne Gaylord snapped this photo (right) as Thompson chatted with WGN sportscaster Jack Brickhouse in the WGN booth. Thompson, was one of over 35,000 people to attend opening day at Wrigley field and watch the Cubs lose to the New York Mets 10-6. STAFF PHOTOS-WAYNE GAYLORD Warrior Nine Splits In Double Dual Elgin Tills OUTDOOR TOPICS by Bob Br»w$t»r MERCURY OUTDOOR CONSULTANT Chauvinistic One definition of women ia low on the list: "Women are people who can talk their way out of anything but a tele phone booth." The Warrior baseball team split a pair of games last Saturday, defeating Elgin Larkin 16 to 15, and losing to Elgin High 6 to 1. In the opener the Warriors jumped out to a 8 to 0 lead after four innings, and things look bright for the local team. However, Larkin then proceeded to score 12 runs in the top of the 5th, an inning which took one hour and ten minutes to play. The lead see sawed back and forth, and the Warriors trailed 15 to 14 going into the bottom of the seventh. A walk, two hits and a error by the Larkin second baseman, was all the Warriors needed in the bottom of the 7th to come up with the win. Brett Thomas had 4 hits to lead the attack. Len Wronski was the winning pit cher. LOSE TO ELGIN In the nightcap, a six run first inning was all the Elgin Maroons needed, and they hung on to defeat the Warriors 6 to 1. Joe Bellich took the loss for the Warriors, now 1 and 2 on the season. McHenry vs. Larkin ab h r Prust, If 4 0 2 T. Frantz, cf 4 14 Thomas, lb 5 4 3 M. Coach Kies was named the Illinois District Four Coach of the Year. In addition, Mr. Kies earlier was named SHARK Conference Coach of the Year, his fourth such conference honor in five years. Coach Kies was named as the McHenry County Class A Coach of the Year last week. His Skyhawk team finished 23-6. The first year school placed 2nd at the Round Lake Thanksgiving tournament; won the Northern Illinois Classic at Hampshire at Christmas; won the SHARK Conference; won the State Regional at Harvard; and finished second in the State Sectional at Oregon, finishing in the top 32 Class A schools out of 471 that began the State Tournament grind. Coach Kies has now compiled an 87-35 (.713) head coaching record in his five years as head coach at Beloit Catholic and Johnsburg. Johnsburg Varsity Baseball Boys Drop Grayslake Games 10-2, 2-0 Paid For By Candidate WILLIS MARTIN By Randy Swikle The Johnsburg varsity boys' baseball squad lost both games of a double header Saturday against Grayslake 10-2 and 2-0. Johnsburg's two runs in the first game were both scored in the first inning. Singles by Keith Surrat, Kurt Valentin, and Don Bentz, and walks by Pat Letizia and John Olsson set up scores by Letizia and Bentz. The Grayslake squad came right back by scoring three runs in the bottom half of the first. Grayslake compiled 12 hits in the ball game, paced by catcher Pat Micucci who went three for three with a double and two triples. In the second game Skyhawk pitcher Jake Breit allowed only two hits, but it wasn't enough to stop the Grayslake team from its second victory of the season. It's hard to believe, but the fact is that more people are seri ously sunburned in an hour on a sunny day than are bitten by snak&s in a year. And a sunburn can do as much damage, causing pain, blisters, peeling skin, and the increased probability of infec tion. Everyone enjoys the sun, es pecially fishermen and boaters who long for winter to end and Spring to arrive. But a word of caution comes from the outdoor recreation de partment at Mercury outboards for those who will be spending a lot of time outdoors in the next few weeks. They recommend that you limit the time you expose skin to the sun, and gradually build up a tan. Being on the water doubles the risk of serious sunburn, as many of the ultraviolet rays striking the water are reflected. Clouds offer little protection from rays which easily penetrate them and continue to reach the unwary boqter. The most dangerous time of day is between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when the rays are direct and the sun is hottest.- The best protection against sunburn is clothing and sun glasses. Wear a long-sleeved shirt, trousers and a cap. If you want a tan, expose your body for short periods at a time -- 10 minutes the first day, in creasing by five minutes per day thereafter. If you do get baked with a serious sunburn, see a doctor, especially if you are nauseous or feverish. ' ' W%r LUCKY BUNNY...
