APRIL 20,1979 Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 18. 1929) Location of the proposed Fox River dam, which has been a bone of contention for more than two years, was definitely settled at a special meeting of the Chain of Lakes association held in Antioch. Over 150 members and other persons interested ..i the project at tended the meeting. Under the agreement, the $175,000 dam is to be located in McHenry. the exact location to be decided by a committee appointed. At the time the legislature ap propriated the $175,000 for the construction of the dam. it was provided that the dam* was to be located on or near the Nippersink creek and Pistakee lake. The McHenry faction strenuously objected to this location contending that a lock would be required for access to McHenry. To determine the location of the dam. a com mittee was appointed to consult with state engineers. The committee was headed by Mayor Peter W. Frett Mr. Frett and M.J. Kent were named as new directors of the Chain of Lakes association. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 27. 1939) A judicial election is scheduled to take place on June 5„(ti the Seventeenth judicial district, at which time three Circuit judges are to be elected The district comprises Lake. Boone. McHenry and Win nebago counties. At this time the important question is how many names of candidates will be printed on the ballots. Republicans and Democrats held conventions in Rockford at which time the Republicans nominated Judge Ralph J Dady of Lake county. Judge William L. Pierce of Boone and Atty. Thomas E Gill of Win nebago. The Democrats named but one candidate. Atty R J Knight of Winnebago An unusual situation, however, was created when the officers of the Republican convention failed to certify before the statutory deadline. The only way the Republicans could get on the election ballot would be by a validation act of the legislature. A bill introduced by Senator Ray Paddock on the validation was up for passage. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 22, 1954)' Another fiscal year for the City of McHenry draws to a close and the Council will convene for the annual meeting. As per custom, the Council will receive the annual reports of the treasurer, collector and clerk, in addition to the usual monthly reports. Custom also follows that following the close of the an nual meeting, the Council will reconvene for a special meeting with action on ap plications for alcoholic beverage licenses the first order of business. Letters representing McHenry county's largest tax bill were distributed recently through the mails. County treasurer declared this tops last year's tax of $4,439,857.26. This year's tax bill is $4,929,480.48. The big bulk of the tax will go to the schools. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 18, 1969) One new alderman joined McHenry City Council and two nearby villages have new presidents as the result of Tuesday's election. The new alderman is Joseph Stanek in Ward 2, who defeated the in cumbent alderman Joseph Etten. Richard Hyatt was elected president of Lakemoor and George Luto was chosen to head McCullom Lake. According to Illinois sales tax receipt during 1968 based on kinds of business according to cities, McHenry ranked second in McHenry county for the year 1968. McHenry's total was $1,234,764 compared to $1,684,131 for Crystal Lake in first place. A retirement party for James M. Powers, National Tea manager for many years, ended in his tragic death when he was struck by a pick-up truck on Ringwood road in front of the American Legion home where the party was being held. Then she handed out the blue ribbons which we were awarded for winning third alternate in the Share-The-Fun contest. Our rummage sale will be held April 28, and the Federation roller skating will be April 23 and 25. 4-H camp will be July 9-14 One of our members. Laurie Nank, was in the Horse bowl and won first place and a state fair trip. Shelly Von- Bruenchenhein won a state fair trip for the General Projects demonstration. Kerri and Jodi Beutel won first alternate and second alternate went to Judy Vyduna.Sue Malenius won third alternate. All the demonstrations were related to Health. Mrs. Finkbeiner announced that the parents' sewing meeting has been rescheduled for April 23. Debby Griggs handed out corsages to the parents and leaders who helped the most with our Share-The-Fun act. She also announced that our road signs were starting to rust and someone offered to fix them. Sue Malenius presented Mrs. Vyduna with a clown music box in observance of National Volunteer week. The meeting was then ad journed and the program began with Laurie Fransworth presenting her MC act, which won first alternate to the state fu. Tanja Cvitkovic gave her MC act. which won second alternate. Robyn Mercure gave a demonstration on latch hook rug making. Steve Smith gave a demonstration on electricity. Kelly Brough showed how to care for a guinea pig. Scott Brough showed how to make God's eyes. Debby Griggs gave a slide presentation on making maple syrup. The meeting was ended and we had refreshments.
