(j&j SENIOR CITIZEN S CORNER, HELPFUL IDEAS FOR SUCCESSFUL RETIREMENT Economics of the Aged In 1976, the median income for those over 65 was $3,495. For a couple, it was $7,030. About 15 per cent of this country's elders live below the poverty line. In 1970, however, almost one- quarter were below that line. As with society in general, women and minority group members have less income when compared to the rest of the elderly popula tion. As marketing specialists are well aware, the elderly represent a major economic market force in this country. Seniors spend a bit more on housing, food and medical care than younger consumers. Of food purchased for home consumption, they buy 13 per cent. Senior citizens purchase 20 per cent of the non prescription drugs bought in the United States. Two years ago, the nation as a whole spent $120.4 billion on health care. On the average, those over 65 spent 3.5 times as much as others. Politically, senior citizens are having an increasing impact upon the nation. In a recent national election, they cast 16 per cent of the votes while compris ing 15 per cent of the voting age population. Seniors vote in much higher proportions than the under-35 age group but somewhat lower than the 35-64 group. MAKING A SEEDBED As you might surmise, a seed bed is where you plant seeds. It is also the key to efficient use of flower and vegetable 9eeds. A properly managed seedbed can sprout- every viable seed planted in it. Seedbeds can be used for the "direct seeding" of vegeta bles where they are to grow on to maturity, or as a "nurs ery" for producing seedlings to be transplanted elsewhere. Seedbeds are usually made only 2 to 3 feet wide for good access. The secret to preparing good seedbeds is in avoiding crust ing and providing close con tact between seeds and soil particles. Close contact with soil particles is necessary for seeds to remain moist while sprouting. Old timers spade up seedbeds two or three days in advance, leave them rough and water them heavily. As soon as the topsoil has dried enough to work, they rake the seedbed level. Pre-waterii.g settles the soil and provides a reservoir of moisture that will be pulled upward through the soil by capillary force. Soils that have been improved for years with regular addi tions of compost will not crust when formed into seedbeds. Unimprovod clay or silt soils will run together like paste when sprinkled, and will dry hard as a brick. Some seeds may sprout but the mortality is often severe. Once a crust forms, further sprinkling can result in runoff. Sprouts then die from dryness or from or ganisms that gfOw-in. ^pjise, P9orly drained soils. If you have had poor luck with seedbeds, here's a sug gestion. Work and rework the surface 2 inches with an iron rake until it has the consis tency of coffee grounds. With the back of the rake push up a 2-inch high bead of soil around the edge of the bed to make a shallow basin. Be sure the floor of the basin is level. Sift about a bushel of compost to break it into fine particles or purchase a bag of "forest compost" made of rotted saw dust and bark particles. Spread a half-inch layer over the seedbed. Lay a 1 x 6-inch board down the row to be seeded. Press it down firmly to make a gentle depression. This depression will mark a wide band for seed ing, rather than a narrow row. Scatter seeds thinly in the de pression. Cover to a depth equal to about three times the diameter of the seed. If you have plenty of washed coarse sand, use it. If not, cover with more compost. It isn't neces sary to firm the covering down on the seeds. Sprinkling will settle it sufficiently. Use a needle-fine spray or spe cial "rose" head on a garden hose to create a fine mist. An old fashioned watering can is hard to beat. Heavy drops will splash and displace seeds and break down the water-retain- ing rim around the bed. Dis continue sprinkling before water starts to puddle and organic matter begins to float. This careful preparation will pay off in good germination, rapid emergence and fast early growth of seedlings. WHAT'S NEW Some believe the appear ance of a number of mice presages war.
