On^The Sidelines By Dick Robbitt With the break in the weather, there has been a lot of activity going on at McHenry High School this week. The baseball team has won two in the Fox Valley, the girls', Softball team has come up a winner, the track team has shown improvement, the girls' track team with a lot of underclassmen is coming into form. That along with the swimming team, and you can see that there are a lot of boys and girls having a good old time in the sunshine, instead of shoveling snow. So for the next month, you can take your pick and watch one of these teams participate. Next Friday night the Annual McHenry Relays will take place, and if you want to see a super track meet just jog out to McCracken Field next Friday night. Some high class teams and individuals will be there. If the Warriors had an all weather track, they wouldn't be able to keep up with all the requests for teams to participate. It is fast becoming one of the better events in this part of the state. An incident that happened to the sophomore baseball team last week has come to my attention, and I think I should share it with you. The Warriors were playing Crystal Lake Central, and when no umpire showed up. Coach Dave Luckett suggested to the rookie coach of the Tigers that they share the honors, or maybe just one of the coaches umpire. The Tiger coach felt that he or Luckett should not umpire. That is a lot of nonsense The game is for the kids, not the coaches or fans. Winning is not all that important. It brought to mind an experience that I had several years ago with the same Tiger team In our game against the Tigers, and it was their opener, the diamond was not laid out. Coach Jim Beck of Crystal Lake and I eyeballed the bases, he went over to the track, broke off a orange hurdle and put it in for the pitcher's box Now this Beck is quite a character, he is presently the coach of the Crystal Lake South Gators. A rookie umpire arrived and proceeded to tell Beck that the bases were not even I think first base was 75 ft from home, and second base was at least 100ft. from first, instead of the regulation 90 ft. Beck then told the umpire, you have six things to do today. You call them safe or out. Foul or fair, and ball or strike. We coaches will take care of the rest of the game, we are not going to give you a list of our subs, we are just going to play ball, whether you like it or not. Needless to say we had probably the best game of the season, more fun, and even though we lost everyone was happy, especially the players. Later in the season when Crystal Lake played here, no umpire, so Bill Butkus assistant coach at C.L. umpired and did a fine job. The sad thing about the sophomore game - it took place during the vacation period, the players gave up a bit of their free time to play a game at 4:30 p.m. and then were not allowed to plav. I personally think each catcher could call balls and strikes, and do as good a job as some of the umpires I have seen in high school games. It is with a little bit of sadness that I report that Coach Bill Day has resigned his football position at McHenry High School. The veteran coach of 23 years, has finally decided to call it quits. He is the third football coach to have resigned from the staff this year I am hoping that the popular coach will get his putter all shined up. and we can head to the links next fall, for a little friendly game of golf. This happened Tuesday at Crystal lake South Gary Collins, former coach at McHenry and at Crystal Lake Central and now coaching at South, was the starter . in the meet. NEWS IS . \ Si RE SLOW IN YDIIH PA.RT OF THE COUNTRY' Medley Mishap Turns Into Magic €f At the first exchange of the baton during the 880-yard medley relay at Monday night's Warrior girl's track meet, the unthinkable happened. As Terri D'Angelo handed the baton to the second runner Diane Biggs, it fell to the ground. After seconds of confusion and despair, Biggs retrieved the baton, while D'Angelo sulked against a goal post, with her head buried in her hand. Biggs relayed the baton to Diane Peterson who ran the third leg and passed the baton to anchor Carrie Mortell, who began the final 440 yards behind by at least 50 yards. But the magic of her running found her crossing the finish line with a few yards to spare as McHenry turned a near loss into victory. FLA. --The 1979 Major League sea­ son in the American League might turn out something like this: Eastern Division: The Yan­ kees are everyone's favorite. After all, they came back like champions in the World Series. And they've added Tommy John and Louis Tiant. They have to be liked. But the race last year was very close. This is a very tough division. Boston is potent, and may not have so many injuries. Milwaukee is really making a move to win it, and both Baltimore and Detroit are long shot hopes. Anything could happen in this division. The opposition is too even, and there are too many tough teams for confidant picks. Western Division: One has to go with the Kansas City Royals but this year the Royals may have it even tougher than last year. The Angels have high hopes, with Rod Carew. Texas might improve even though the team lost several big-name hitters. The White Sox look better. Gene Mauch keeps Minne­ sota respectable.
