The local Country club will open for the summer season April 28. FORTY YEARS AGO (Takenfrom the files of May 5, 1939) The City Council of McHenry has spent a busy week. The annual meeting, a special meeting and the regular May meeting kept the wheels of city government revolving at high speed. Items of special interest plucked from the records pertain to changes in per sonnel. McHenry has a new alderman, a new policeman, a new fire chief and a new assistant fire chief. A.E. Nye took his place among the aldermen. Jack Smith has been appointed to succeed Peter Wirfs. Under a new arrangement, the chief, John Wirtz, will share the night patrol with Smith. Plans are under way to purchase a police car for the city. Augustine (Gus) Freund was named the new fire chief and Ed Smith designated as assistant chief. CONDOLENCES With the death of Maxwell Razee on April 12, the Kawell family lost a dear father, grandfather and great grand father. He had been hale and healthy through his eighty- second year, after which falls resulted in broken bones and hospitalizations. He leaves a good legacy for all his family. Mrs. Jim Cunningham died April 16 at her home. She had been ill, and was being cared for by her husband, Jim, and her son. Our deepest sympathy goes to this devoted family. Neighbor Chris Sances is among those who are very saddened by Astrid's death. May pain one day be eased by the happier memories. GET WELLS Dear lady Mary Behrendt is home from the hospital after having a hip problem taken care of. And Louis Schueler came home in time to spend Easter with his devoted LaVerne and other family members. Sally Rogers would appreciate get-well cards and prayers. May all who are ailing be comforted. CELEBRATIONS Anniversary wishes go to Lorene and Michael Martin, who are commemorating their twenty-seventh year of marriage on April 26. April 27 is Dawn Meyer's birthday. William Sinkler, Lakemoor trustee, celebrates the same day. The twenty- eighth is Jo Bartelt's day and the thirtieth belongs to Laura Meyer. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 29, 1954) McHenry may be the proud possessor of a new and modern swimming pool if the fund raising campaign which began this week is successful. In discussing such an undertaking it was felt a pool large enough to accommodate a community this size could be erected for $30,000, including all necessary facilities. A number of sizeable contributions have already been made. Dr. Lee Gladstone is chairman of the fund raising campaign. It is hoped that the pool may become a reality within the next year. A committee of subdivision and organization members was formed at the Chamber of Commerce meeting to work with the City Council on correcting the pollution of the Fox river. The new Gies shoe store opened for business on Riverside drive. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 25, 1969) The more than century old Justen building of 1265 N. Green street was entirely gutted by flames in an early morning fire which for a time also threatened Bolger's drug store to the south. Early damage estimates were set in excess of $70,000 by a member of the family. James Althoff was elected president of the McHenry high school board to succeed Vale Adams, and Dr. Peter Griesbach was named to head the consolidated grade school board. Walter Dean of McHenry stepped down as chairman of the county board of super visors, completing two terms of devoted service to that group.
