They are the international symbols for handicap parking, and soon they will be placed on some of the major streets such as Green street, Riverside drive, and Elm street. These signs are blue in color, and have an outline of a person in a wheel chair in white on the face. On the streets, they will be placed Public Relations Officer McHenry City Police Phone 385-2131 probaoiy near the corners, and in the market place these signs will be placed at the ends of the parking lanes near the stores. You have probably already seen these signs if you have been in the market place lately. Please respect these signs as they go up around town. They are reserved for our han dicapped neighbors, and we as good neighbors should* not use them. These two phrases have been used to try and get the public to be more careful when they drive, and to help them avoid having accidents. I have another phrase that I would like you to add to the other two, and' use to help you become a better and a safer driver. It is "Watch out for yourself". Sound le? Have you ever heard that you are your own worst enemy? Same thing. Everyone knows that while driving, you should watch the other guy to make sure, or as sure as you can, that he or she is going to do what it looks like he or she is going to do. For example, you see a vehicle driving down the road with a turn signal on and the vehicle is approaching an intersection. It would appear that the vehicle is going to turn. But, does the vehicle also start to slow down as it gets nearer the in tersection and start to move nearer to the direction that it is going to turn? If it doesn't do these other things, maybe the driver just forgot to turn off the turn signal from that last turn he made. You will wait until you are sure enough that the vehicle is going to turn before merican >OWELL K2316M Maple wood-grained finish *54888 Save ,30°° Early American The HINDEMITH K2320PN Pine wood-grained finish applied to durable wood products • 100% Solid-State BUY NOW--SAVE NOW! If you don't wait until you are sure that the vehicle is going to turn, and you pull out in front of k and it doesn't turn, you have just been your own worst enemy, along with the other gu$ having not been his own best friend, and you two run into each other. That is part of driving defensively. My phrase adds to that, and I'll try and explain just what I mean. How many times have you been at an intersection waiting for an opening in the cross traffic so that you can pull out safely? Quite a few times I'm sure. How many times though, have you seen a vehicle, at the same intersection, that is coming towards you and is already Very close, but you pull out anyway because you think that if you rush, you can beat the other vehicle and get out and not have to wait so long. Or, how many times have you been day dreaming, and sud denly realized that you were too close to your destination to safely change lanes to get there, but you risk quickly moving over without looking in your rear view mirror, hoping that there isn't another vehicle in the other lane to hit you. <- Or, you are late for an ap pointment, and you know that if you drive the legal speed limit, you'll be late, so you speed there, hoping that you'll make it not quite so late. Take your pick, or think up one of your own. In either case, you haven't watched out for yourself, and you have been your own worst enemy. All that I want you to do is be more careful, take your time, and plan your trips a little better so that you have time enough to drive carefully, and legally. Here is a little warning about parking in McHenry. Be sure that you feed the meters when you park next to them. It may only cost you a nickel, but the fine is $.50 for not feeding the "monster". If you should come upon a meter that doesn't work, either look for the metermaid, or come to the police depart ment and tell us about it so that we can repair it so that you will not receive an unnecessary parking ticket because of it. The weather is getting better now so have a nice day and get out and enjoy it. "Maybe it will help you forget last winter. Going My Way? According to one Gallup Poll, almost 70 percent of Americans believe they will go somewhere after death. OLDEST... Santo Domin go's Santa Maria La Menor, oldest cathedral in the new world, holds the remains of Christopher Columbus in this marble sarcophagus in the nave of the church.
