APRIL 25,1979 SPORTS MCHS Frosh-Soph Girls Beat Central Softball Team 15*3 CLOSE RACE, and Warrior Pat Teuber scores the only Warrior run as he crosses the plate as the hall got away from the Jacobs catcher in this first game action. The Warriors lost the first game by a 2-iscore. They dropped the second game by 11-1 with Teuber again scoring the only run for the home team. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Say It Isn't So! Warriors Lose Three Ball Games It was a bad weekend for Coach Ken Swanson and his Warrior baseball team as they dropped three games. Friday night Grant's 4 run sixth inning led, to a 7 to 5 Warrior defeat. Greg Mroz had a double and Pete Prust tripled for the Warriors. Len Wronski was the starter and loser for the Warriors. In the opener the Warriors jumped out to a 1 to 0 lead, but Jacobs managed 2 runs in the top of the 5th to gain the win. In the nightcap a 11 run third inning for the Golden Eagles erased a Warrior 1 to 0 lead and they went down to their 4th loss against 2 wins in the Fox Valley this season. 1st Game Jacobs 00 0 0 0 2 0 2 4 2 M c H e n r y 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 2 3 Bradshaw and Hellstrom - Bellich and Hoff 2nd Game McHenry 1 0 0 0 0 12 2 Jacobs 0 0 11 0 0 II 12 2 Gaulke and Feldman. Sue Dixon led the way with a two run homer while Kerry Kraus and Vicky Nowak each scored 3 runs. The young Warraiors ex celled on the base paths, leaving only 2 runners stranded and stealing 7 bases. Two days later the McHenry Frosh-Soph team was not so fortunate as Dundee beat the Warriors 11-3. Four infield " errors, 8 McHenry runners left on base and 9 base on balls paved the way for the Cardinal victory. ft Let's start out with something big. The following note was on my desk: Chuck Sowers, bowling with Krumpen builders on a Tuesday night men's league, bowled a 300 game Tuesday, April 17. He is the third in the county to do so this year, and > two of the three have been from Wonder Lake. I imagine Chuck is still walking on air. It is the dream of every bowler to scatter the pins for a perfect game. Two out of three from Wonder Lake? Must be an epidemic in those parts. Would like to add my congratulations to the many pats on the back to Chuck. Now let's catch up on the mail -- or some of it. A note from Arline Pearson (a schoolmate, you know) en closed a rain check from Comiskey Park and says she. "For some reason when I saw the words White Sox, I thought of you". Arline found the rain check in a purse during the recent rummage sale at the Ringwood church. Of course, the stub is dated Sept. 4, 1971, but she thinks it should be good and wants me to try using it. The note ended, "Sorry about your leg injury. If it had hap pened on St. Patrick's Day it would be understandable." Or kicking a football! Now here's a note from Sharon Nye with a letter from Katherine E. Kelley from way out in California. Katherine has a screw driver with advertising on it -- Feeds - Seeds - Flour, West McHenry, 111. -- Phone 29. For history's sake, she would like to know where it came from and what year. That was the phone number of the McHenry Co-op way back when. Now, I hit a memory block. Donald Givens, who has a memory better than a history book, worked in the mill many long years ago. Maybe he has some recollection of the ap proximate date when the screw driver was handed out. Ed Bonslett's father operated the mill in early days, but it seems to me Bill Spencer's mill was the only one selling flour in those days. Leo Blake must have started his career at the Mill at a later date. Anyhow, can anybody help a gal named KeJJey? Since receiving a beautifully written letter from "Zeke", he and Charlotte phoned me last Sue Smith and Donna Chesler each singled and doubled for the Warriors ab r h rbi Kraus, Kerry 3 3 1 1 Smith, Sue 3 2 1 2 Dixon,Sue 3 1 1 3 Chesler, Donna 3 0 0 0 Smith, Eileen 2 2 a 0 Sproull, Tammy 3 1 l 0 Prust, Jenny 2 2 l 1 Nowak, Vickie 1 3 l 0 Chesler, Mary 2 0 0 0 Hermes, Shari 1 1 l 0 Totals : 23 15 7 7 McHenry 3 1 0 47-15 C.L.C. 0 1 0 02- 3 Saturday. That was a mighty nice call. Of course, "Zeke" had to ask me about our weather and you may be sure I told him the days are perfect. Couldn't get t£e best of him though. Said he was going to dive into the pool as soon as he hung up the phone. The way Harry Caray and Jimmy Pearsall were carrying on about the fill-in umpires Sunday, the thought occurred to me that they should do the umpiring and let the present umpires take over the broadcasting booth. Guess we all agree that the umpiring is weird. If it is true that the big league umpires signed a contract, they should honor those con tracts and stay on the job while negotiating. Heading about the salaries of fringe ball players, makes me think the oft-abused umpires deserve more money. But going on a strike after signing on the dotted line doesn't seem right. Remember way back when a handshake or a man's word was as good as his signature? * One of these days the owners will have to bend or the season will be a catastrophy. That's one fan's opinion. Come to think about it -- nobody asked me. Watching Barrios pitch against the Cleveland Indians Sunday made me think that when he is good, he is very, very good - And when he is bad, he is terrible. OBSERVATIONS: How much longer can the Cubs keep Vail and Thompson on the bench? On the other side of town, Ralph Garr, once known as the Road-Runner, is a greatly improved fielder this year. We thought competition did it. Garr credits Jimmy Pearsall's coaching. Fox Hole Evo is all smiles. The team they sponsor won the championship in the Thursday Nite League in a playoff or roll- off. No details, just smiles. That blamed Larry Nim- sgern must arrange to meet me whenever the White Sox lose a game. He must be out of town when they win. Met Tom Phalin hobbling down to the polls last week with the aid of his wife Ellen and decided if I ever challenge anybody to a foot race -- he's my man. Out to West Campus Sunday night to attend the McHenry Choral Club spring program. That group is jam-packed with talent, trained voices, top- The McHenry Area 12-Inch league is preparing for its Jpeventh opening day of slow pitch scheduled to begin on Wednesday, May 2. Ten ball clubs have been running through numerous practice sessions, some in the poorest of weather conditions, each teartt intent on getting the first place trophy at year's end. ThiS year, ten teams will compete on five diamonds each Wednesday in an expanded 27- game schedule running May 2 through Aug. 29. Playoffs between the top four teams will run Monday and Wednesday nights starting on Sept. 5 with two best of three semifinal contests. The championship finals will follow, a best of five series. Also new this year will be a Sunday, July 1, league all-star game at Petersen park. With the addition of two more teams, the league acquired the use of a section of A.P. Freund field behind the old Admiral building. Along with southwest corner diamond at Petersen park, the league uses two fields at West campus and one at East campus. This year's league includes all eight teams from last year: The Old Bridge-John's Sport Stop, last year's league champs and playoff champions (un defeated in 27 games); Raymond's Bowl, the second place team; Uncle Jamie's, who are the same King's Row third place team of a year ago; Wayne's, last year's St. Regis team which finished in fourth place; Huemann's Water Conditioning, who were O'Brewery last season; Rusty Nail; Little John's; American Family Life Insurance, last year's McHenry hospital. Added to this list are two new teams: B & H Tap from Har vard and Oaks Marathon from McHenry. With ten ball clubs preparing for the 1979 twelve inch season, it seems only a few years back that a few men from the McHenry hospital, the Medical group and Brake'Parts joined together with another group dually sponsored by the Riverside Laundry and the Retail Merchants to form a recreational Industrial soft- ball league. The league went through a metamorphosisduringthe early years as competition in creased, players ages dropped, batting averages soared and fielding plays took on a "major league look". In just ten short years, the league has grown up to become just as popular as its older 16- inch "cousin", well-proven by the enthusiasm of the players and fans. This year promises to be even more exciting with ten teams notch accompanists, clever costumes, well planned staging and Narrator Tom Bir mingham Of course, the program all revolves around our "Brenda", known to most as Adele Froehlich. On the way out, people were singing her praises battling for first place. This writer will give a short run down on each team, its strengths and weaknesses, its manager's hopes and feelings for the year, the probable starting lineups and a list of reserves in approximately three installments. Included in the final in stallment will be the fearless forecast which I'm sure will again be influenced by my~ friend Jimmy from Las Vegas. UNCLE JAMIE'S Uncle Jamie's out of Wonder Lake was last year's suprise team in 12-inch play. Playing under the sponsorship of King's Row. Chuck Marke and com pany swept their first four games. By the end of six weeks, the Row was 6-2, two games out of first. The Row then- slumped, winning only 6 of their next 13 regular season games, but their record was good for third place and a playoff position. The competition was Raymond's Bowl, .a second place team figured to easily sweep the series and meet Old Bridge in the finals. No one told manager Tim Whitman or the rest of the Row as they knocked out 18 hits in a 14-7 thrashing of Raymond's in game one and then concluded the best of three series with a 15-10 rout, outhitting their opponents 23-17! Everyone is back this year, except starting pitcher and third leading hitter Tom Whitman. Manager Tim Whitman is counting on last year's "experience to help create a more relaxed at mosphere on his ball club." Another playoff position is a "definite possibility but pit ching could be a problem." On the positive side, Bill Cable has cleared up old in juries while Jesse Watson is hitting the ball well in batting practice and the team is mentally prepared to start the season. If Chuck Marke has the same kind of year he had last year the rest of the team will follow the lead. John Walkington has proven himself both offensively and defensively while Tim Whitman and Randy Schultz have both shown they are capable 12-inch hitters. Probable starting lineup and last year's batting average: Pitcher: Bill Roarke (.308) and Tim Whitman (.426). Catcher: Ken Bohac (.231) and Denny Summercamp (.341). First Base: Rick Sorenson (.000). Second Base: Bill Howard (.358). Shortstop: Chuck Marke (.584). Third Base: Jesse Watson ( .282). for the superb direction she gave to the program Well, I don't want to brag her up too much or she might think I am not running true to form. Sunday was a beautiful and Coach Dan Boland's McHenry High track team finished behind the host school and Grant in a meet held in Antioch last week. Antioch won the meet with 89 points followed by Grant with 62 and the Warriors had 34 points. Warrior Scoring 2 Mile Relay: Third 440 Relay: First 100 Yd. Dash: 2nd , Schaeffer 880 Yd. Joe Prazak is taking over the helm this year and guarantees his team is playoff bound. Not only will Wayne's be quicker and faster than last year, but several key players have healed their injuries and will be at 100 percent. Manager Prazak says he is going to get the most out of his players because of his bench; they are constantly going to be pushing for berths in the starting lineup. Most important of all, Joe is definitely going to get more offense from his big hitters. He is working with their individual styles, correcting here and suggesting there. Last year was definitely a disappointment at the plate for most of Wayne's players as batting averages dipped to averages well under their 1977 season. Don Prazak, Irish DeCicco, John DeCicco and Jerry Brodin provide plenty of power while Bob Buss and Matt Oik are two capable hitters. Kevin Horner, John Wilkinson, Bill Haak and 58- year-old Len Koziciki, the oldest active player in the league, are all new acquisitions this year and should see plenty of action. In fact, Manager Prazak feels they won't miss the ser vices of Gary Connell, a .427 hitter a year ago and the team's leading scorer. Horner and Haak are both quick, capable outfielders who can hit well besides. Probable starting lineup and last year's batting averages: Pitcher: Irish DeCicco (.491), Mike Reilly (.235) and Len Koziciki. Catcher: Jerry Brodin (.355). First Base: Scott Stull (.405). Second Base: George Cadotte (.353). Shortstop: Matt Oik (.338). Third Base: John DeCicco (.442) and Bob Buss (.341). Left Field: Kevin Horner. Centerfield: Don Prazak (.493). Right Field: John Wilkinson. Shortcenter: Bill Haak. Reserves: Roland Wood and Ken Prazak. Thursday's game with Dundee, which was shortened due to darkness, saw the Warriors pass up a couple of scoring opportunities in dropping an 11-7 game. Loading the bases in the second after two outs brought no Warrior runs. In the following inning, the leadoff batter reached second base but was stranded there when the next three batters went down in order. Finally in the sixth, with one out, Chris Connell slashed a triple to left center but the throw from the leftfielder to short to home cut her down at the plate. The fifth inning was the only inning the Warrior varsity scored, pushing across all seven of their runs. Dale Williams doubled with one out, followed by two base on balls to Terri Bohlman and Chris Connell. All three rounded the bases on suc cessive wild pitches. Sharon Smith walked and stole second. Vicky Kopsell knocked out a double driving in Smith and Sue Haddick blasted another double bringing in Kopsell. Pam Reinholm kept the rally going with an RBI single and later scored on Kathy Bit- terman's two-out single. McHenry pitcher Sue Had dick struck out seven batters and gave up five hits in five innings.
