TO THE DRAKE Lucky enough to get tickets, Leonard and Phyllis Ackerman attended the Drake relays at the Drake university, DesMoines, Iowa, last weekend. They watched many great athletes from all over the United States straining to break records and attaining points so as to work toward the prelims for the next step toward a hopeful tryout for the •Olympics. They went to see their nephew run for the University of Kentucky. And they got to see the Olympic great, Jessie Owens. It is truly a great event to see as it is track, high jump, javelin, discus, shot put, broad jump and pole vault. So if anyone has someone they know in sports, get out there and give them your support. It is really worth it. That's all it took, the suitcases were in the car along with the fishing rods and motor, and the Bruces hit the road once again. They were headed for Bolivar, Mo., and Bull Shoals, Ark. Once they got there, they found the weather had taken a turn for the worse, although they did get in a couple of days of good fishing. But they had a bit of bad lack as their motor quit when they were a couple of miles from where they were to land. Nice bit of rowing to do. Then came down the snow and rain and hail and all the nice springtime surprises. But Clayt said that the Red bud and all the Dogwood were in bloom, and all the trees were in full leaf, and just beautiful. They had a good visit with Merrill and Estalee Culvey and Harold and Anita Bruce. They stopped in Cisme, 111., on their way home to visit with Clayt's sister and his mother, who is not well. Hoping she feels better soon. GRANDPARENTS Congratulations are out to Urban and Dorothy Bauer, as they are once again the proud grampa and grandma to a 7 lb. 14 oz. Paul James Huff. He ha§ a sister at home waiting for his homecoming. The happy parents are James and Sandy (Bauer) Huff of Barnard Mill road. The youth rally has been planned for almost a year. Wise, 36, a nationally known folk singer and speaker will lead sessions Sunday af­ ternoon, May 6, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at St. Thomas school on "Search for Values" and "Be A New Man". Tickets for the rally include admission to Joe Wise's session, dinner, entertainment by a hypnotist and the closing of the rally with a candlelight Mass at St. Thomas Pierson street church at 8 p.m. The Mass at 8 p.m. is open to the public. New Student Trustee Sworn In At College DEBORAH PINER Deborah Piner was sworn in as the new student trustee on the McHenry County college board at the April MCC board meeting. Ms. Piner, who lives in an unincorporated area near Cary, replaces Lanita Burris of Woodstock on the board. She was elected in a student election April 4 and 5 with 99 votes. Others in the race in­ cluded Joe Walter of McHenry, who received 80 votes in the election and will be alternate student trustee this year, and Holly Zasada of Woodstock, who received 50 votes. Piner. 40, is a Palatine high school graduate who worked for 10 years doing general accounting at Oak Industries in Crystal Lake. She decided to return to school to change careers and is planning to go on for a bachelor's degree after completing her studies at MCC. Explaining that she is in­ terested in politics, lobbying and in education and is con­ sidering political science as her major, Piner said she once considered running for a local elementary school board. A 16-year resident of McHenry county, Ms. Piner said she sees the student trustee's role as representing not just MCC students but also the general public. She said that as a board member without a vote she sees her role as one of contributing "human aspects" from a student's viewpoint to board discussions. While stressing the validity and importance of the business decisions the trustees must make, she said as student trustee she sees her role as adding a different view. Ms. Piner also serves on the United Fund board for Cary Grove-Oakwood Hills and is very active in Girl Scouts.
