STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD SPORTS EARL WALSH' So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR morning, about the ti4w of washing my neck and eafrs. I get a different song on the brain. Starting last week, tht private concert went like th|s: Monday -- Rose Marie Tuesday -- Let The Rest of Hie World Roll By Wednesday -- Ja-da-Ja-da .lada-Jada. Jing-Jing-Jing. (A catchy number back in the 20fc>. Thursday -- I Left Her In Mtnlerery Friday - Take Me Out To The B&I Game. |itfurday -- Don't Send Me Posies On Sunday, I had my first sitfging lesson. < It didn't help just born fifty years too soon). ( tyhat bothers me in retrospect is that not one Irish tube took over all week. Maybe it is time to see a psychiatrist. jfou would think some choice niftnber like "Who Put The Overalls In Mrs. Murphy's C'towder?" would have come to mind some time through the w{ek. Note to Sharon Nye. We are still trying to get an answer for that Keiley girl in California about the souvenir screwdriver. Sunday afternoons in these parts, has fallen by the wayside. Am wondering if McHenry or Johnsburg will have teams this year When McHenry and John sburg played against each other in early days, there were some arguments you wouldn't want to put on tapes. Talked with Dick Rabbitt and he was shaking his head about the weatherman putting the damper on spring sports at McHenry High. Anyhow, it has been a great season for McHenry's duck population SUDDEN THOUGHT: Hope nobody in Tucson reads our weather reports. If those scientists keep on feeding our food and medicines to rats, we may be hard put to find anything that doesn't cause cancer Perish the though of what reaction those dirty rats might have to a juicy steak. There is one theory that we are what we eat Maybe so. But Would garden greens make us a bunch of vegetables0 Would peanut butter make us a bunch of nuts° Would pork make hogs of us9 Would beef make us a herd of cows? You finish it. Make up your own. At a certain age. people are accused of living in the past. Why not? There is a lot more past than future. Sometimes I can't remember if I have told you a yarn like this one before Loaded onto a cart for a trip to surgery, there was a beauteous nurse at my side all tne way But. where was she when I needed her? Let me tell thee, coming out of the anesthetic and looking at a male nurse who had arms like a blacksmith, was enough to bring on shock Just closed my eyes and drifted away again Boys And Girls Can Register Now For Pitch, Hit & Run Developed in cooperation with the President's Council on Physical Fitness and co- sponsored by the National Recreation and Park Association, local registration for the Pitch. Hit & Hun event is well under way. Youngsters aged 9 through 12 are signing up for the fun competition which will be held at Peterson Park May 13 and May 20 The event will test the Old Bridge-John's Sport Stop, American Family Life Get Ready Old Bridge-John's Sport Stop and American Family Life Insurance are highlighted in the fourth installment of McHenry Area Twelve Inch preseason rundowns. Next week the final two teams in the ten team league will be covered along with the 1979 prognosis. Ol.n BRIDGE- JOHN'S SPORT SHOP Well, what can you say about a team which bats over .500 (.065 points higher than the next highest club), boasts 7 of the top 16 hitters in the league (including the top 3), goes undefeated in regular season competition, breezes through the championship playoffs and even sweeps a doubleheader versus the league all-stars?! Awesome statistics whenever McHenry Twelve-Inch Softball is discussed! But the "New York Yankees" of Twelve Inch are not the same team they were last year. Co-captain Joe Dehn states, "another year of playing together has only made us stronger." Dehn goes on to say that this ball club, with acquisition of Phil Kiefer, Mark Dehn and Ron Lentine. could be even stronger offensively for the 1979 season. The offense is led by the league's premier .600 hitters. Steve Rohrer and Joe Dehn. Rick Waktisch and Doug Freund. both .500 plus batters along with Greg Freund and Tom Les provide the Bridge with potent firepower. Add starters Tim Althoff, John Pitzen and Dave Schaefer along with the league's best hitting benchwarmer', Gary Gilpin and you have a mur derers row second to none'! One possible setback to the Bridge 1979 pennant drive will be the loss of shortstop Ron Miller. Miller, who was sent to the Rusty nail for a first round draft pick in 1980 plus 2 players to be named later, batted .540 last year and in some book is the best shortstop in the league Dehn stated a week before opening day that they were "still undecided as to who will play short" although Doug Freund, Ron Lentine and Joe Dehn may all get a shot at the position before the season is over. After an undefeated season most teams find the road dif ficult in achieving the same results two years straight. Dehn concurs stating "it s always easy for other teams to get up for us." On the other side of the coin, "staying up for every game and every team" during a 27 game season could have its effect on the 1978 champs. Whatever the effect you can count on the Bridge to again be the team to beat in McHenry's Twleve-Inch play. Probable Starting Lineup and Last Year's Averages: positon. Name ave. Pitcher, Greg Freund .493 Catcher, Steve Rohrer .655 First Base, Rick Wakitsch, .584 Second Base, Tim Althoff .365 Shortstop, Undecided Third Base. John Pitzen .423 Left Field, Doug Freund .543 Centefield, Tom Les .487 Right Field, Joe Dehn .602 Short Center. Dave Schaefer .431 Reserves: Phil Kiefer, Ron Lentine, Gary Gilpin. Mark Dehn. Pete Merkel, and Gene "Pino" Hester. AMERICAN- FAMILY LIFE American Family Life In surance, or as Manager Terry Vandenboom jokes the "A F of L," has not changed its name since last year. Vandeboom states that the team which won less than 7 games in 3 years and only one last year has gone a long way in improving its lineup for the 1979 season. Eight ballplayers have replaced eight 1978 Hospital players and Vandeboom counts on "maybe six o» them star ting". One of them could be "one of the top players in the league". His name is Gary Wagner and he will be in the outfield. Rusty Schlitenmeyer promises to be another top prospect who can "hit well and also play tough in the field". Robbie and Ken Nichols are two brothers who will provide power hitting to the club which batted only 333 last year Back again are Terry Van denboom. Rich Hopper and Pete Blackburn, the best batters from last season. Hopper and Blackburn were .450 plus hitters while Van denboom led the team in extra base hits Jim Neuman. Brian Drake. Mike Howes, Ray Collis and George Amedio are returning veterans while newcomers Charlie Olson. Tom Davidson and Randy Mathias round out the ball club. Manager Terry Vandenboom is quite pleased and optimistic with this year's team. In fact he feels that his goal, which is to make the playoffs, can be realized this year! That is a long way to come in one year, but even if they don't make the playoffs they will ^ definitely not be the pushover McHenry Hospital was last year!
