Annual Spring Bird Count In one of the largest on-going volunteer conservation efforts in Illinois, over one thousand birders are expected to par ticipate in the eighth annual statewide spring bird count on May 5. The spring bird count, organized by Illinois Depart ment of Conservation non- game biologist Vernon Kleen, is an attempt to keep tabs on spring migrant birds that will be passing through Illinois. By the beginning of May the migration should be at its height and Kleen hopes that the army of birders will eclipse last year's record of 259 different species sighted. _ A l t h o u g h a n y o n e knowledgeable about birds is welcome to take part in the bird count, Kleen acknowledges the strong assistance given him by Audubon Society clubs throughout the state. Birders who wish to par ticipate in the spring bird count will work under the direction of a compiler in each county. A complete list of instructions along with a time chart and species list will also be issued to each birder. Participants in the bird count are expected to spend at least eight hours in the field. The count will be taken from 12:01 a.m. May 5 until midnight of that day. Traditionally, northeastern lUinois has always had the gre atest number of participants in the bird count, Kleen noted. Cook county last year had eighty observers and DuPage county seventy, whereas the average county had only about ten. Naturally this prepon derance of birders in certain counties means that more birds are sighted in those counties. Kleen uses statistical methods to take into account the number of birders and the amount of territory they cover in order to gain a better understanding of the true distribution of bird species in the state. The most common species sighted last year was the redwing blackbird, which is apparently increasing in numbers and coming back from large population losses due to a spraying program during the winter of 1975. The same holds true of the common grackle, the second most often sighted bird. Although the grac|le has not reached the population levels of 1974 prior to the spraying program, it has bounced back strongly with nearly a 50 percent increase over its numbers during the previous year. The house sparrow, on the other hand, still a very common specie, has shown a very gradual but continual decline in numbers. Also on the upswing are the rock dove, American pigeon, and the American crow. Other often-sighted species during the spring bird count are the lesser golden plover, the European starling, the NOTICE Public Notice is hereby given that on April 12, A.D. 1979, a certificate was filed in the Office of the County Clerk of McHenrv County, Illinois, setting forth the names and post-office addresses of all of the persons owning, conducting and transacting the business known as PINE TREE PET SHOP, located at 2102 W. Apr. 27, May 2,1979) CONSUMER GUIDELINES Saving Two Ways Most Americans have adapted to the 55 mph speed limit, with the result that thousands of lives are being saved on the nation's highways. A plus factor is savings in energy and fuel costs Most cars g«t about 20 per cent more miles per gallon on the highway at 55 than at 70 mph FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 3. 1929) Daylight Saving time in Chicago went into effect during the weekend and millions of hours of sleep were lost for Chicago's three million residents, when clocks were set ahead one hour. Daylight saving time is also to fc>e ob served in Cary, Fox River Grove and Barrington this year, while the plan was defeated at the recent election in Crystal Lake. The change of time means that Chicago is one hour ahead of McHenry and has caused a change in the train schedule for this city. Many new homes are being erected in the city and at Pistakee Bay. Perhaps the largest and most palatial residence that has been erected in this vicinity for several years is the Hollenbach home at Pistakee Bay, which is valued at $40,000 This mansion, situated among the trees high above the blue waters of Pistakee Bay, will present a most imposing spectacle with its beautiful grounds and will be one of the show places of Pistakee. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 12, 1939) After three hours of deliberations, a jury in the condemnation suit of the Department of Public Works of the State of Illinois vs. Thomas A. and Grace Bolger of McHenry to obtain ap proximately fifty-seven acres of land, returned a verdict awarding the Bolgers $6,000. Judge Henry L Cowlin presided over the case, which took two days and one evening session. The land acquired by the state will be used to enlarge the present dam in Fox river below McHenry, which for thirty-five years has controlled the waters of the river and created a higher water level in the lakes of northeast McHenry county and in Lake county Pregnant, iNEED HELP?
