PAGE 22 - PI.AINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, MAY 2,1979 Wonder Lake Anne Sowers 653-9549 STAR SHEARING - George Shearing, internationally acclaimed jazz pianist, appears at the Woodstock Opera House Sunday, May 6, for two performances at 5 and 7 p.m. Reserved seating at 99.50 is available by calling the Woodstock Opera House ticket office. "Pops" Celebrates Ninety-Third Year With Family Party Ed "Pops" Gallagher, who resides with Harriet and Ed Gallagher, Jr., of Wonder Center, celebrated his ninety- third birthday April 30. Adding a very special part to his celebration was the presence of four generations of Edward William Gallaghers. Helping to celebrate were Dee and Ed Gallagher III of Oak- wood Shores with their children Lisa, Michael, Carrie and Eddie IV. What a marvelous way to celebrate, by having your family around you and seeing your name carried on through four generations. Hope your birthday was a very special one, Pops! OPEN MEETING Since there is such great interest from the community about the Wonder Lake State bank, which is now being formed, an open meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 2, at 7 p.m. It will take place at the bank, on the corner of Hancock drive and Wonder Lake drive. The organizers of the bank are Herbert H. Franks of Marengo, Edward Marsh of Woodstock, Helen Lindow of Marengo, Morris B. Squire of Wonder Lake, Edward Mecum of Marengo, and Stephen J. Mitchell of Elgin. VACATIONERS RETURN The April meeting of the Wonder Lake Garden' club, at the home of Mrs. Gilliland, was indeed a special one, as vacationing members were back to again compliment and complete the group. The meeting was a general one except for the nomination of Mrs. Matyll Banky as first vice- president and Miss Louise Nown as corresponding secretary. Installation of of ficers will take place at the next meeting. The charming hostess concluded the evening with refreshments fit for a queen! The next meeting will be Thursday, May 10, at 8 p.m., at the home of Mrs. Betty Alderson, 2008 N. Ridge road, McHenry. Again, anyone interested in gardening is most cordially invited to attend. B. Alderson Publicity Chairwoman HOUSE WALK For several years, Wood stock has had some of its beautiful homes open to the public to see, through the sponsorship of the Memorial Hospital auxiliary. Other communities, such as McHenry and Richmond have also had similar events. The Woman's club feels that many Wonder Lake homes are very interesting and beautiful, so have decided to hold a house walk in our community. On June 2, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. four homes will be on the house tour. They are the home of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Aberle, 7907 Bay view road; Mr. Fred Dickman, 7812 Island Lane; Mrs. Jean Zimmer, 4311 E. Lake Shore drive; and the A1 Graff's, 8304 Howe road. Tickets, along with a map showing directions to the homes, can be obtained from any club member or may be purchased at any of the homes on the day of the house walk. Proceeds from the spring event will go into the Club's scholarship fund. SENIOR CITIZENS The Senior Citizens would like to invite all members and guests to their May 7 meeting which will begin at 1 p.m. in the Nativity Lutheran church hall. The program will be given by a pharmacist, talking about the proper ways to use different drugs, and also ways they should not be used. Lydia Germain, club president, feels this will be a very informative talk for all senior citizens. Desserts and coffee will be served after the program, and all senior citizens are invited. May 7 - Senior Citizens NIPC Director Resigns \ The man responsible for much of the planning for the future of the Chicago area and its suburbs announced his resignation from that position. Matthew L. Rockwell, executive director of the Northeastern Illinois Planning commission, told members of that regional planning agency that he would end his 16-year service to NIPC June 30 in order to return to the field of his professional training and ex perience-urban design and architecture, where he will resume his career as a con sultant and planner. No plans to find a successor to direct the regional planning commission were announced. However, NIPC President Cyril Wagner said that the position was of great importance to the future of the metropolitan area, and that a national search for a meeting - 1 p.m. - Nativity Lutheran church hall. May 13 - Mother's Day May 17 - Woman's Club meeting; 8 p.m., Nativity Lutheran church hall. May 19 - "Village Run" - registration 8:30-9:30 a.m.-run beginning 10 a.m. at Wonder Center beach. commission director would certainly be launched. It is expected that the job of finding that successor may take some months of screening and evaluation of candidates for the position, according to NIPC President Wagner. Rockwell is a nationally recognized expert in the field of urban planning and design. In 1968, the American Institute of Architects awarded him a fellowship for his work in organizing one of the first comprehensive plans for a major metropolitan area. An analysis of that work by the University of Pennsylvania compared it to urban planning in six other major metropolitan areas, and concluded: "It would be a plausible claim to say that northeastern Illinois, of all the top-ranking metropolitan areas in the U.S., has come off with the most positive land use and tran sportation plan." Second Choice "You're my second choice," the lady told the politician. "Thank you," he replied, "who's your first choice?" "Anybody else who's run ning! " CTEP To Focus Effort On High Risk Sections The Illinois State Police are once again engaged in the concentrated traffic en forcement (CTEP). This is a selective traffic enforcement program developed and im plemented to reduce the number and severity of traffic accidents at high risk locations through enforcement action and police visibility during the days and times when past experience indicates most accident hazards exist. The locations for this program were selected by using Illinois Department of Transportation accident statistics and the recom mendations of district com manders and their staffs. The state police has received a National Highway Traffic Safety administration grant, funded in fiscal year 80 through^ highway safety money with the Department of Transportation to operate this program. CTEP was initiated in Sep tember of 1977, and is staffed by state troopers on their off duty time, vacation days or holidays. Twenty-eight five man teams, consisting of a supervisor and four troopers will participate in the program in the months of May and June and possible September, Oc tober, November and December of 1979. In District Two, which covers Lake, McHenry, DuPage, Kane and DeKalb counties, CTEP will be worked in all of the counties. The following is a list of locations in McHenry county that will be CTEP patrols: 111. 120 from Greenwood road to county line Lake county; 111. 31 from south county line, McHenry county to county line Kane county; 111. 176 from 111. 31 to county line Lake county; U.S. 20 from county line Boone county to county line Kane county; and 111. 23 from Kish- waukee road to Coral West road. These routes will be used during the months of May and June and will be changed again in the later months. As the months go by, the state police will keep the public in formed as to the progress of the CTEP program. CTEP was developed to make our high ways a safer place to drive, and it is there to help the motoring public. Few people respect in telligence, and fewer possess it.
