It appears to be Dan Schaeffer (third from left) of McHenry. It wasn't. Joe Trainor (2nd from left) of Crown was declared the winner and Jim Pish (4th from left) of Hoffman Estates was second. Schaeffer had to settle for third, and that's the way it went for McHenry daring the annaal relays as they finished eleventh of fourteen schools. The rain even played against McHenry as the event had to be moved from the home advantage McCrachen Field to Crystal Lahe. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD So nam on gun we had some fun at the surprise party for Scott Dixon to celebrate his eighteenth birthday at Crescent Bay Landing. In case you don't know Scott Dixon, sports fans will tell you he is an outstanding athlete who played a big part in the Johnsburg Skyhawks highly successful basketball season tliis year. • 'Scott's transfer from \lcHenry High to the new Jbhnsburg school left a big void in the MCHS athletic program. ;Hosting this great party were R£ndy Swikle and his en thusiastic wife. From what I saw. Mrs Swikle loves young ptople - and young people love h*r • »The program was divided i$o first, second, third and f<*irth quarters. jThe first quarter covered "Xhose Were the Days. My FViends" f Jlandy accumulated slides of Sgott. his teammates, coaches and others Some went back to early childhood days and progressed to the present time -- -This was ooe of the cleverest most amusing bits of en tertainment we have seen in many a day Randy meshed his sparkling narration with perfect timing -- iThe second quarter was (inner The third was birthday *ke Plenty of action in both. * -- 'rThe fourth quarter consisted of roasting Scott and others in the crowd. They didn't spare the horses. Scott's brother Chris had some little gems to send through the mike. So did Don Bentz, a long time pal of Scott. They came prepared and en joyed their roles. There were many others, but lest I forget somebody, let's just say they were all very good. The skies opened up as we were leaving, but through the kindness of Don Bentz, Sr., who brought our car as near to the building as possible, Alvina and I got only half soaked. Randy and his wife put in a lot of work on details to make this one of the most pleasant events we have ever enjoyed. Being included and remem bered touched a spot in our hearts. Young men like Scott Dixon, Don Bentz and their teammates are fine athletes. What is more, they are outstanding young men. It was good to see Harold Blake looking so well as he dined at Bimbo's on his bir thday Harold was all pepped up about his Cubs. Bet he jumped into the air when Bobby Murcer hit that 3-run homer Sunday to give the Cubs a victory over Atlanta Chuck Hiller's Kansas City Royals are hitting stride after a slow start That should make WAS YOUR PICTURE Reprints of any photo which appeared in the McHenry Plaindealer and taken by our staff are available at modest prices. Third and fourth place floor exercise awards were earned by Crystal Lake's Mitby and Bartley on floor exercise for the 10 and 11 year old team. On Friday Old Bridge and American Family Life will be looked at. Next week both new teams. Oaks Marathon and B&H Tap. will be highlighted to conclude analysis of all ten teams in the league. Included in the final article will be the 1979 prognosis which both Jimmy the Greek and myself have collaborated! RAYMOND'S BOWL Head Manager Wayne Frantz was going over Raymond Bowl's roster the other day and not listed were the following names: Don Bentz, Jim Meyers. Paul Morenz, Bill Oeffling and Jim Yaworski. Frantz looked up and without hesitation stated."This year's ball club will be better then last!" Frantz's team will be younger this year but that may be the only negative comment to be said about this team. Picking up Billy Meyers. Marty Zeller, Terry Reilly, Don Bentz. Jr., Jeff Meyers. Tony Bentz and Wayne's oldest son Tim should go a long way in the 01' Tiger smile from ear to ear. Our Sox? They looked like the greatest in the first two games with Texas, then came Sunday. Just call it a one game losing streak. Tommy Sutton said it wasn't so. but "Red" had that now famous bowling trophy on our table before we were through the Fox Hole door. "Red" had the proof. Tommy claimed "Red" had it made up specially. "Red" and Evo. team sponsors, have a championship citation from ABC through McHenry Rec naming Jerry Kern, Ray Rode, Mel Krueger, Dick Kleinhuizen. Bob Blake and Herman Graef as champs. It must be true! providing Raymond's Bowl with hitting and fielding depth. All are or were top hitters in the Sixteen Inch Boys' League. Frantz says. "That many of these kids will not be starting but their quickness, defense and team attitude will go a long way in making the 1979 season successful." Veterans returning include Vinnie Freund, Myron Bentz. Phil Oeffling, Wayne Hiller. Tom Spasojevich, Rich Meyers. Ted Freund and Wayne Frantz. Together the eight players combined for over 200 hits including 54 extra base hits in 21 league games. Add to that list Tom Hurckes and Harry May. who both figure in strengthening the left side of the infield, and you have the makings of a championship caliber ball club. Last year was Raymond's first year in the league. Although the Bowl finished in second place a disastrous semifinal series, where they dropped two straight, un doubtedly shattered their 1978 goals. Raymond's only won two thirds of their games last year That record plus not winding up in the championship finals with Old Bridge should only prove to be a "blessing in disguise" this year, according to Frantz The fact that Raymond's Bowl is going to be "that much hungrier" should be a warning to any unwary teams in the league! They definitely have yet to prove themselves. Starting Lineup Year's Batting Probable and Last Averages: Positon. Name Pitcher. Wayne Frantz Catcher. Vinnie Freund First Base. Both combined to make a dreadful season for fans and players alike. This year Manger Vic Freund is optimistic about the club. He feels they "will be more competitive and his goal this year to be .500 by season's end " Only six ballplayers are back from last year and one of them. Fred Shepston, is presently out with a shoulder injury. Shep ston along with another speedster. Ray Franklin, are two fine outfielders who batted 467 and 468 respectively last year. Paul Adams will again be in the infield and Bob Wakitsch will play whenever needed. Outfielder Guy Hansen along with pitcher Vic Freund round out last year's returning veterans New Acquisitions include Jerry Sullivan who two years ago was a top twenty hitter. Jeff Meddings is a player Freund feels should really help the team at shortstop Add to Meddings' defense a good left handed bat and Little John's has an All Star caliber ball player Joe Sullivan and Scott Belonlavy are two power hit ters who will play at each corner of Little John's infield. Bill Meath and Marty Fossum are two promising candidates who will be pushing for starting positions. Freund states. "If Little John's can keep away from the opponent's big inning which took us out of too many games last year we will definitely improve our record in 1979". Manager Freund will be busy ironing out common snags' that crop up on a "new" ball club where positions are not yet guaranteed; but he is not too worried. In fact he can't wait to start the season because in this estimation "they have no where to go but up!" Probable Starting Lineup and Last Year's Batting Average: Position, Name ave. Pitcher.
