SECTION Z-PAGE 2- PLA1NDE \I.ER- FRIDAY, MAY 11,1979 Make "Public Affairs" Scholarships Available State Representative Cal Skinner, Jr. (R-33rd district) is sponsoring Genera) Assembly "Public Affairs" scholarships again this year. Each Illinois legislator is given the privilege of awarding several scholar ships to students wishing to atttend state universities. The representative has made up an advisory board of area educators who make the actual selections. The members of the Scholarship Advisory board include Robert Gough, asisstant principal at John- sburg high school. The qualifications for the scholarships are residency in the 33rd Legislative district, acceptance at the state university of one's choice as a full time student, and the student's participation in public affairs. After these three criteria are met, the committee will award the scholarships according to relative need. \, Students are encouraged to apply regardless of how much in need they are. Because of the outstanding quality of the Illinois State Monetary Award program, students with real financial need will be advised to apply for a regular state scholarship which will provide the same coverage as the legislative one, that is, tuition and fees. Students at all levels of academic endeavor are eligible. Applications may be obtained from the represen tative's Crystal Lake office at 65 E. Woodstock street. Ap plications must be submitted and files completed by June 15. Notifications of scholarship awards will be made by July 15. * * * * According to most films, a glass of whiskey is the answer when the going gets tough. • • * « Life would be more simpler if plaques and scrolls were eliminated by iaw. loiloSghtC ABOUT to know I BREAD BREAD It is impossible to repro duce the texture and volume of bakery made bread at home. The texture of "store bread" stays soft for a long period of time as the result of glycerides -- fats which have been broken down from triglycerides (the form the housewife buys) to di- or monoglycerides. These emulsi fying agents give a finer grain to bread doughs, just as they give a fine grain to frozen desserts and ice cream. * • » A 1976 Public Health Service Survey revealed iron deficiencies in three key age groups: among children one to five, 31 to 40 per cent of the diets were deficient in iron; between the ages of 12 to 17, 23 to 33 per cent were short of iron; and among females 18 to 44 years old, 41 to 50 per fcent had iron deficient diets. In addition, black children aged six to 12 and adults over 45 showed iron intake levels below government standards. SEE • • • • • BEFORE YCU BUY. For some people, enriched white bread may be a better source of iron than whole grain bread because of a compound called phytic acid in the whole grain flour which forms a strong bond with iron, zinc and other nutrients. The bond is so strong that much of the iron in whole grain products may not be released for the body to use. Iron in white bread's en richment formula is either "free" iron or ii^bn in the form of ferrous sulphate (FeSo ) -- the form that as far as is presently known, is the most easily used by the body. • • • Bran is not the same thing as fiber. Fiber is the term used to describe the cellulose in the cell wall of plants, while bran is the outer coat of the wheat kernel. Cellulose is one of three types of carbohydrate -- the other two are starch and sugar. Fiber is a non- caloric nutrient. The body doesn't break it down during digestion as it does starches and sugars. However, it is highly absorbent and this has the effect of softening stool and aiding in the elimination of body waste. A high-fiber bread will have 20 to 30 per cent fewer calories than a regular bread, because cellulose is replacing some of the flour in the loaf and the body cannot digest the cellulose. * * * Hie Institute for Nutri tion Science at the University of Giessen, West Germany, put 40 men and women be tween 18 and 62, all over weight by five to 40 per cent, CALL YOUR LOCAL WATER CONDITIONING DEALER: KINETICO gruner TOM HUEMANN WATER CONDITIONING 2103 W. Bread com prised 46 per cent of the daily calories -- 220 to 285 grams a day. All essential nutrients were included in the diet, which was com posed of 60 per cent carbo hydrates, 20 per cent protein and 20 per cent fat. All of the people on the four week diet lost weight, averaging about 12.75 pounds each. Not one of the dieters reported any feeling of hunger, even though the calorie intake was low. Re searchers credit the high bread intake with keeping the dieters from abandoning the low-calorie diet. * * * * Television is teaching this generation its man ners (or lack of manners), and its history. «5f Happy Mother's Day HEAVY-DUTY ROUTERS WMHl PERFORMA n ACE HARDWARE * RT.120) 3729 W.
