\ PAGES -J>LAINDEALER - FRIDAY, MAY 18,1979 & HELPING PAWS ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION P.O. Box 205 • Crystal Lak«. Illinois 60014 • (815) 459-2641 By Estelle Atwell We can blame the past winter, gone but not forgotten, for a lot of problems-among th em one that concerns pet and is related directly to the unique type of winter weather we had. Evidence points to an in crease of allergies that affect a dog's skin. Skin itching in dogs is occurring earlier and in greater frequency this year, according to one veterinarian in this area. Ordinarily skin itching in dogs doesn't become a major problem until late in the summer, but already there have been numerous cases of it, he reports. As soon as the snow cover disappeared, owners were bringing in their dogs for treatment of skin itching and scratching. The early snow cover built up with the almost continuous snowfall that followed, remained through the entire winter. Consequently, the ground was never exposed to the usual extreme cold which kills off bacteria and eggs of fleas and ticks. They may well turn out to be a bad year for fleas and ticks. But one of the main problems for people who have dogs is that they immediately assume when the dog scratches that the reason is fleas or ticks. Then out come the flea soaps, shampoos, flea collars, dips and insecticides and the animal is liberally treated with these. However, some of these products may only aggravate the irritation particularly if the problem is not fleas or ticks. For fleas or ticks he feels that flea powders are probably the least irritating measure to rid the dog of the pests. In Los Angeles and Corpus Christi, Texas, they have fleas that are absolutely resistent to all in secticides and the only remedy is to use water and drown as many of the fleas as possible. One of the things dogs are allergic to are molds that are inhaled and result in dry skin and itching. Dogs have very sensitive skin because they have no sweat glands, and pH balanced shampoos are good for routine bathing. He points out that dry skin is not a lack of oil in the skin; it's a lack of water. The skin is not func tioning properly to seal in the water and protect the dog. When the dog is scratching and his skin is irritated, moisture is leaving the skin, litis problem is aided by using a mixture of an oil that can be bought over the counter at a drug store and water. The formula he suggests is one part of the oil to twenty parts water, room tem perature, and spraying this on the area of dry skin once a day. Dog groomers can often detect early skin changes associated with dryness. If this condition is pointed out to the owner, serious itching and infections may well be avoided. While Helping Paws awaits the many litters of puppies and kittens soon coming our way, Animal Control now has an abundance of both. I'm not sure why I was fired but I do know we were all evaluated when the new managergwas hired. I was doing a good job. I increased my production even though I had not reached the goal the previous manager had set. I don't think I should have been fired. What rights do I have against being discharged? Generally, Illinois law does not prohibit an employer from firing an employee. However, some agencies enforce specific statutory provisions which prohibit discharge because an employee files a claim for unpaid wages, reports an un fair employment practice, incurs a wage assignment or wage deduction order or reports an unsafe or hazardous condition. Other considerations include labor union contracts, personnel rules, employer's policies and federal laws. If you have been discharged for any reason that was prohibited by a specific law, union contract, rule or policy, then, normally "V * m "Julie" (Sue Albllnger) explains to Billy Bigelow (Mike Davis), "The Sky is so big, the sea looks so small.and two little people, you and I • we don't count at all" at a recent rehearsal of "Carousel" at Marian Central high school, Woodstock. "Carousel" opens Friday, May 18 at M-arian and also will be playing Saturday and Sunday. Curtain time is 8p.m. and tickets are available at the box office. it til el your rights will be spelled out in that medium. , 2. I am planning to quit my job and stay home with my children. Can I collect unem ployment insurance until I decide to go back to work? No. You are not eligible for unemployment benefits if you quit your job without good cause. You would not be eligible until you found another job or 8 weeks after you quit. You also would not be eligible unless you were able to work, available to work and actively looking for work. Other cir cumstances might also disqualify. If you need further assistance go to the Unemployment In surance Office in your area. (Listed in telephone directory.)
