"Dear Editor: "Although we live in the greatest country in the world , there's still lots of room for Improvement as is shown every day by our federal, state and local officials. Are laws made to benefit us as citizens or to fit the convenience of the government? We have to wonder when faced with a problem such as we are today. "We are a young couple trying to deal with the high rate of inflation and yet follow the g r e a t A m e r i c a n dream...owning a home of our own, raising a family and enjoy the beauty and wealth of the most powerful and wonderfully free country in the world. But, we seem to be stopped at every intersection of life with problems created by seemingly illogical rules that work...not in the favor of the com munity...but, in fact, against the good of the masses. "Recently we purchased a small home that had been left to rack and ruins for two years by its previous owners. With plenty of ambition, elbow grease! and what money we had for a down payment...and what money we could borrow...we set about the task of rehabilitating our first home. FRONT ST., McHENRY were very pleased. Our home is located in Wonder Lake, on a high scenic corner lot...in an area of other small houses. It is a growing area. Many new homes are being built in all directions. "Before beginning our rehabilitation, we went to the county for a permit. McHenry county, at the time, told us that they would rather that all these small homes would fall down. We don't want them improved! Is this the great American dream? If so, its basis sadly escapes me. If we want to maintain and upgrade our neighborhood...as many of our neighbors do, why are we told you can't put aluminum siding on your home - just paint it. "How practical is it, I ask you, to paint asphalt shingle? Are we in any way altering the size or shape, or even the ecology of the community? Why won't McHenry county let us maintain and rejuvenate our home? 'Because the ordinance says so...that's the only answer we get.' Would they rather that it remained an eyesore? "Truly, would Jane Byrne tell a slum landlord...'No, you cannot improve your property'. "Wherein lies justice? For whose good and for what purpose do these county of ficials who are servants of the people and have been placed in these county positions of authority tell us, 'Let it fall down. Let it remain an eyesore! Let the neighborhood fall apart'. "Don't we have a voice of the people? For what did our forefathers fight? Wherein lies justice and the American dream?? "Respectfully, "Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Butler "2718 Hickory drive "Wonder Lake" NIGHT STORE OPENING "Dear Editor: "I do not disagree with your conclusion that inconsistency among businesses as to which night to remain open creates a IN STOCK NOW & READY TO DEAL! This completes the stretch of con crete to the top of Spencer's hill and as this has been a bad road for several years the pavement will be greatly appreciated. The State Highway depart ment is to complete the paving of Route 176 that will extend from Lake Bluff to Wauconda to Burton's Bridge on the McHenry county line this summer, it was indicated recently when it ordered the dismissal of two condemnation proceedings in circuit court. The paving is complete from Lake Bluff to Wauconda. Johnsburg may have played some poor baseball in their last appearance, they may play poorly in their next game, but let no one say that against Ringwood they didn't exhibit some real baseball. The score was 4-3, but all three of Ringwood's runs came as a less than convenient climate for shoppers'. "I do, however, take issue with your choice of merchants and those merchants them selves whom your paper in terviewed. Of the nine selected, two do not open their stores either night (I let the asininity of their inclusion speak for itself). "Four of those interviewed are so 'concerned' that they would not even join the Chamber of Commerce, the only organization in town which tired to solve this problem. They know who they are, and I ask them: 'Without your support, how do you expect this organization to represent the collective views of McHenry's business community?" "As a result of the apparent inconvenience caused by in consistent evening hours, the Chamber of Commerce pledges to rectify the situation for the sake of McHenry area shop pers, whose patience and patronage we appreciate. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 29, 1969) Complaints have been received by city officials that some persons are burning garbage and rubbish instead of having it hauled away. This is in direct violation of ordinance regulations. City officials are appealing to violators for fair play and consideration of others. If this fails, police action will be necessary. One-third of the $15.8 million in taxes expected to be received by June 1 has been collected according to County Treasurer Cal Skinner, Jr. Usually about 66 percent of the year's taxes are paid by the June 1 deadline for the first installments. In this first year that the McHenry county banks have made an all- out effort to aid the Treasurer's office by encouraging payment at their banks, the percentage paying at banks has jumped from last year's 25 percent to almost 38 percent. This year the Johnsburg Tigers will attempt to rise from the depth of mediocrity.
