THOUGHT FOR FOOD By GOULD CROOK SUCCESSFUL RETIREMENT Conserve, Save There are some ways that you can save water around the home without drastically affecting your standard of living. In the process, you can cut your water bill. Following are some simple water-saving tips: --Have leaky faucets fixed or replaced. An "average" leak wastes up to 5,000 gallons a month -- at an estimated cost of about 140 a year. If the leak is from the hot water faucet, add another $40 of waste for heating the water that's lost. --Purchase a new showerhead. The newer models use less water and increase the enjoyment of a shower by permitting you to regulate the spray. --Use full loads when using your dishwasher or washing clothes. You'll save not only water, but fuel. too. --If your water is hard, con sider having a water softener installed. --Leaky toilet tanks waste from 3.000 to 5.000 gallons of water a month -- costing you up to $50 a year They are simple to repair --Add an automatic temper ature control to your shower It will enable you to preset the tem perature before turning on the water. An automatic control could save you up to $50 annually in water and fuel. Words are the most pow erful drug used by mankind. -Rudyard Kipling. Quick Tricks 1.
