CX500 .USTOM HON D A Having just one of those days, Letty Busscher regained her nickname of "Sandy" as her ball seemed to be magnetically drawn toward most of the traps. However, with coolness and aplomb she had no trouble- in blasting out of most of them. A number of the gals found the sand attractive but Joyce Kintzel is the only one who reported flying out of the sand on no. 17 directly into the cup. While Maddie Holmes was see­ sawing from one trap to the other on no. 15 some of the other ladies were executing some interesting shots. Jane Weiss skirted the sand by flying over it and hitting the flagstock on no. 1, Joan Schloskey chipped into the cup on no. 8 from over the creek (that's really skillful!). Anna Johnson sank her appraoches on both no. 8 and no. 9. And Liz Nolan got her only bird for the season so far on the no. 4 fairway. It seems she was in the tree-line and one of the feathered creatures took flight at an inappropriate time. Two other birdies mentioned were those of Nell Fidler on no. 14 (routine for Nell) and Alvina Yopp on no. 6. To date the Nifty Niners have not registered any named events. They've just been out there playing and enjoying their games. Ethel Hartman mentioned that she had her best round so far with only 14 putts. Nice going, Ethel. The Nifties can be distinguished from the 18-holers by the glamorous totes they've been toting, compliments of one of their favorite members, Ann Blaney. The team did it again last Friday by hosting and troun­ cing Brae Loch, taking 8 out of the 9 points. This week they travel to Thunderbird in Barrington and hope to con­ tinue as winners. Since the school year has ended the flow of sports news from those great contributors like Dick Rabbitt and Randy Swikle has also ended for the summer. For a while we were asking for extra space for sports news. Now we are asking for sports news to fill the space. We aren't looking for longer stories. What we like is a variety of coverage. Having gone through this period for umpteen years, it isn't a problem that will cause the remaining hair on my noggin to fall out. Listening to the Cubs play the Padres of San Diego this Tuesday afternoon only strengthens my belief that Chicago should have a City Series next fall. Such a series would aid two worthy causes. The proceeds of the game could be used for youth programs. That's one. A side bet with John Busscher would benefit an old sports writer's retirement fund. That's two. Catchers are in the spot to take the worst bumps, but very few of them are knocked out of action. There was a time when catchers had the fingers on their bare hand twisted out of shape. Guess they have learned to close the fist. When a star like Rod Carew gets his thumb knocked out of joint in a tag at first base, you begin to wonder. With the scare of gasoline shortage, real or created, all kinds of ideas are cropping up to save the precious fuel. The last one is to cut down on weed and grass cutting along the roadways. I can remember doing that job for a spell one summer with my uncle's big team hitched to a mower. There is still something to be said for the horse. Harry Caray announced that a group of thirty McHenryites were in Comiskey Park Tuesday night after watching the Cubs in the afternoon. Too bad -- they didn't see much baseball as both Chicago teams bit the dust. Oh, how I was wishing the Sox could pull that game out of the fire! Hope the group arrived home before this goes to press. Fred Ballstaedt won over Mo Domoto in third flight and Hal Nilles beat Gary Spengel in fourth flight. The first round of the 2 man aggregate tournament was played at lhe club on Sunday, June 3rd and winners were, in first flight the team of B. Jacobs-J. Nolan, J. Smith-J. Werneske, P. Overton-G. Spengel, J. Packer-J. Kern, K. Waberzeck-K. Kinneman, S. Stanek-H. Nilles, R. Waytula-A. Leight. In second flight the team of J. Sayler-B. Anrech, N. Simon- T. Burke, R. Spiess-J. Wakitsch, T. The event this week was "replay Golf" which, if you remember from last year, is being allowed a "mulligan" on each hole. Either everyone was in extra fine "fettle" with their golf game this week, or Lady Luck was extra kind, as we found almost all of the golfers no need for the "mulligan" on every hole and still turned in some nice scores. Iden Weeks took first place for the men with a gross score of 38 (9 holes), and our "Odd Couple" member, Shirley Dawson took first place for the women with a gross score of 44. Pretty darn good scores! "Magilla" was surprising us all by shooting fairly straight down the fairway. I think he's been taking lessons in secret. Jane Switzer turned over the scrap book for the new "keeper of the book" and everyone enjoyed reading about our events from last year. Jane did a terrific job with the book and there were pictures from different events as well as a golf joke. Sometimes it is fun looking back. We were all saddened to hear that Howard Kopp, our new member this year, had a heart attack Sunday and is in McHenry hospital in the Coronary Care Ward. We all wish him a speedy and com­ plete recovery. Hope he will be back in our ranks later this year. Our prayers are with you, Howard. Next week we will have a "mystery golf" event, and hope the weather is as cooperative as it was this past Sunday. Plans will be made for a "cook-out" sometime in late June or early July. This will take place at the club and we are all looking forward to a good time following our golf event. A dozen or so tied the low net while the balance registered as also-rans. Low net of 71 was scored by Floss O'Connell in Class A while in Class B it was Carolyn Harger with 76. In Class C Carol Bolger and Jean Napier tied for Low Net of 76 while Gladys Warfield took Low Net in Class D with 74. It was also Grandmothers, Non-Grandmothers Day, separating the haves from the have-nots. The preceding gals, with the exception of Carolyn Harger in Class B, were the winning grandmothers. In Class B the honor went to Dot Freund with a net of 77. Non- grandmother in Class A was Nancy Wilkins with an 84, in Class C a three-way tie for low net of 84 was shared by Kitty Ballstaedt, Jean Remke and Gloria Otth. And, in Class D was Sherri Weakman with net 75. Low putts for the day in Class A were 28 rolled in by Grandma O'Connell, in Class B Anna Johnson kept hers down to 27, while Barb Leight in Class C had 33 and Kitty Evans in Class D had 29.
