Lambaste RTA Proposal The average family in the six Chicago metropolitan area counties will pay 4.7 times more in RTA taxes if the present 5 percent RTA gas tax is replaced by a 1 percent RTA sales tax. "During the last year, the RTA gas tax cost motorists almost $73 million. That sounds like a lot, but it's a lot less than the approximately $350 million that a 1 percent RTA sales tax will cost," Rep. Cal Skinner, Jr. (R-McHenry county) reports. "When taxpayers give a local government more money, they are, in effect, telling the government that they like what that agency is doing and want more of the same," the McHenry county lawmaker observed. "Certainly, the RTA has failed to deliver on the 1974 promise of its proponents: 'Public transportation, when and where you need it, throughout the region'. "I contend that RTA will never be able to deliver upon that promise as long as Chicago controls it," Skinner said. Under the proposal, subur­ ban Cook county taxpayers will pay $134 million in RTA sales taxes. During the past year, they have paid $29.7 million in RTA gas taxes. McHenry county's $1.8 million in RTA gas taxes will leap to $5.9 million should a 1 percent RTA sales tax be enacted, according to Skinner. Skinner suggests that now is the time to contact one's state representatives senator if one doesn't think the RTA's proposed trade of a 5 percent sales tax on gasoline to a 1 percent sales tax on everything is fair.
