Dixon Secretary of State Vacation time is coming up - take safety along with you. If you forget something else, you probably can replace it. Forget safety and it could ruin your entire trip. If you are driving, make sure your vehicle is in good operating condition. If you haven't prepared your car, truck or recreational vehicle for hot, summer travel, have it checked thoroughly before you leave. Plan to drive a comfortable number of hours each day, allowing ample time for possible delays. Stop periodically at rest areas to avoid fatigue. You should avoid quarrels while driving, which could affect your concentration. Be extra careful if you hit ex pressways around large cities late in the afternoon when traffic is heaviest. Pay close attention to your speedometer and stay within the posted speed limits. A speeding ticket could be an unwanted expense out of your vacation budget. (A copy of the Rules of the Road will be sent to you upon request. Write to Alan J. Dixon, Secretary of State, Springfield, 111., 62756.) FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 20, 19291 The members of St. Mary's court, No. 594, Order of* Foresters of McHenry and St John's court.. No. 96 of John sburg held a joint initiation at St. Mary's church hall in this city. This meeting was one of the big events that will be recorded in the annals of the local court and long be remembered by its members. McHenry and vicinity was visited by an electrical storm which was the second severe storm of its kind this summer The storm broke about 1 o'clock and lightning, thunder and rain seemed to vie with each other for about two hours with the heavens on display of fireworks. Two lots in Shalimar sub division were sold recently to Mr Sunde, owner of the An- nabelle Lorraine Dress Shops in Chicago Mr. Sunde has already started work on a house to be built upon his property in that subdivision Kent & Company also report the sale of two more lots at Shalimar which were recently purchased by Theo A Bovilsky of Chicago FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 29, 1939) Jobless workers of McHenry who may be entitled to weekly cash Unemployment Com pensation payment were ad vised by the manager of the local Illinois State Employment Service office to go to the office on and after June 28, to make appointments for filing their first request for benefit payments. Old age assistant payments totaling $8,987 have been made to 433 recipients in McHenry county during the past month according to a report made by John C. Weigel, superintendent of the state division of old age assistance. The local allotment was part of a grand total of $2,504,734 paid to more than 131,000 aged needy Illinois citizens. An explosion of the ammonia in the ice machine of the McHenry Dairy, near John sburg, drove employees out of doors as fumes filled the bottle washing rooms. Cause of the accident was attributed to a weak spot in the pipes, which was soon repaired and work at the dairy was resumed under normal conditions with machinery in fine working order. TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 24, 1954) Six future senior students at the local high school are at tending Boys State at Springfield where, with 1,200 youths from throughout the state, they are learning at first hand the various phases of government operation Eight were selected by a vote of the faculty to attend but two were unable to make the trip. The eight chosen included Jack Pearson, Howard Useman, Francis Oeffling. Gregory Nowak, Dick Kloepfer. Carl Poedtke. Terry Reid and Ralph Patzke. The happy noisy laughter of children--200 of them - replaced the quiet which reigned at Villa Maria. Catholic Charity camp on Pistakee Bay, with the opening of the summer season. As they made their way to the entrance to the grounds the youngsters saw for the first time the two new buildings which were only recently completed TEN YEARS AGO < Taken from the files of June 18. 1969 > Donald Walker, 37, of Lake Geneva. Wis., is being held in Lake county jail, Waukegan, charged in a warrant issued for attempt to commit murder and aggravated battery. Walker is wanted in the shooting of State Trooper Sven Ljunggren of Woodstock A total ot 273 pediatricians were elected to fellowship in the American Academy of Pediatrics at the spring session in Boston Among the new Fellows is August M Rossetti, M I) of McHenry. The McHenry chapter of The Tots for the Chicago Cubs in '69 announce the election of Brendan Walsh president of the organization. Twenty-one- month-old Mr. Walsh thus becomes the McHenry chap ter's first president. Mr. Walsh is the grandson of the McHenry Plaindealer's Sports Editor Earl R Walsh But Grandpa Karl is a Sox fan. We own much ot it, waiting to mine it when we need it. And we will need it Because by the end ot this c^ ~' the demand tor electnoity is exptaed to triple Our coal will help meet that demand But it's also doing something else very important It's helping conserve scarce fuels: oil and natural gas Over half of the electricity we make comes from coal and most of the rest comes from uranium. Both are abundant fuels. Last year these fuels provided us with energy equal to 100,000,000 barrels of oil Coal is one important reason we can call electricity the Conservation Energy It's one way we can make sure there will always be enough electricity Commonwealth Edison electricity is made mostly trom abundant coal and uranium That helps conserve the scarce luels oil and gas e Commonwealth Edison Working (or you Coal Uranium S
