Town And Country Newcomers Club Plans Summer Schedule The June meeting of the Town and Country Newcomers club was held recently at St. Paul's Episcopal church in McHenry. Several events scheduled for the summer months were discussed and approved. After the meeting was called to order, the chairmen of the major standing committees gave their reports. Membership chairman Nancy John distributed the updatedTnembership lists to all those present. Mrs. John also stated that new prospective membership letters are available for distribution to realtors, subdivision development offices, Welcome Wagon, and Royal Welcome. Also in her capacity as coor dinator of the gourmet group, Mrs. John spoke about the arrangements for ttyfe couples' group dinner excursion to the Wedgewood Inn in Richmond on Friday, June 29. In the absence of newspaper publicity chairperson Helen Borland, the president com mended Mrs. Borland for her very informative article preceding the club meeting. The group agreed that good publicity is essential to] the growth of the club. Social chairwoman Paula Ekstrom had several important announcements. The Ladies' Luncheon took place Tuesday, June 19, at the Old Courthouse and Jail in Woodstock. Nearly half of the club membership took part. The next monthly meeting will take place Tuesday, July 10 at St. Paul's church at 7:30 p.m. A unique feature of the club's next "tea, Talk, and Sew" (a morning coffee) is the site, at the city's Petersen park at 9:30 a.m. Babysitting will be available for small children at a nominal fee. Those attending should bring their own refreshments. In place of a monthly evening meeting, a salad luncheon will take place Aug. 15, beginning at 10:30 a.m., at the home of Helen Borland, Maple avenue. Those planning to attend should bring a sack lunch for their child and a dish to share. Finally, as an "end of summer" celebration, Mrs. Ekstrom announced the scheduling of a couples' "steak fry" for Saturday, Aug. 25. Further details will be available at the next club meeting. In her capacity as chairperson of the club's summer tennis group, Mrs. Ekstrom stated that those interested in playing tennis should meet at the courts in Petersen park on Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. Lastly, Ways and Means committee reports were given. The "Cutest Baby" contest arrangements are proceeding smoothly, and the next newspaper article will appear June 22, giving more details on the contest. Chris Sonnichsen, Ways and Means chairman, discussed various fund-raising events that could add needed funds to the operating budget of the club. An all-club garage sale was discussed and approved. The sale will take place Saturday, June 30, at the home of past- president Shari Weakman, Fairway drive (Fairway drive is just south of Shepherd of the Hills church, and is right off Green street). Items should be dropped off Wednesday, June 27, or Thursday, June 28. All members are urged to con tribute to this effort. Tentative plans have also been made to hold the club's third annual Bake Sale during the Sidewalk Sales day during Fiesta Week in July. This event has been very successful in the past. For more information on either event contact Mrs. Sonnichsen. After the business meeting, members enjoyed hearing an excellent presentation by past president Sandy Howell on remembrances of her recent trip to England, Scotland and Wales. Her charming stories and descriptions brought the British Isles alive to her listeners. For more information about the Newcomers club, drop by any club meeting or call Mrs. Joseph John. Columbus Discovered? Venezuela was discovered by Columbus on his third voyage in 1498. It was later one of the first colonies in the New World to revolt against Spain (1810). In dependence was finally achieved in 1821 under the leadership of Simon Bolivar, Venezuela's national hero and native son. WONDERLAND... The eerie unblemished beauty of South Dakota's badlands draw millions of visitors to the western part of the state each year. Prehistoric beasts once roamed the Badlands and their fossil remains make the National Park one of the richest Oligocene fossil beds in the world. RIGHT HERE!
