• U \ V > W V ' • TUESDAY. JULY 3. lilt Editorial July 4,1979 Bit by bit we are selling America to foreign powers by importing energy at outrageous prices ... This costs America its' international respect, its' credibility, and its' economic liability. Why don't we get to gether and demonstrate a little common sense by conserving and sensibly using our natural resources? Let us stop being spoiled comfort-seekers . . . soft. . . and thoughtless of real human needs. Saving Energy If Congress had the courage to enact the necessary legislation, s siipttficsnt percentage of the energy consumed in the United States could he almost immediately conserved. Unnecessary night lighting for advertising purposes could be banned after 10 p.m. Auto racing could be reduced to s minimum. Flood lighting of government and public utilities buildings could be banned. Interior lighting at night could be reduced. . Billboard lighting along the highways could be barred after 10 pjn. Sports events could be moved from 8 p.m . to 7pjn. And, if the energy crunch becomes grim enough, pleasure boating, flying and driving could be limited. But Congress won't pass such legislation, the people, or voters, would raise such a howl, some members wouldfac ousted in next years' congressional elections. In short, the truth is that the people are not yet ready to make the sacrifices necessary to reduce .energy consumption. ; As a result, when the next oil cutoff comes, we are likely to Witness an undisciplined panic-by an undisciplined citizenry, most •of whom are today too young to remember either World War II or die depression, the last two major crises to threaten America.
