Schaefer's meat market was wrecked when it was struck b ckby right a car approaching at a angle to it. The accident oc curred at the east end of the new Pox river bridge. The truck, driven by Robert Thurlwell, was approaching the bridge on Route 20 when a car coming from the south ran into it, evidently without stopping before approaching the pavement. Robert Knox was severely bitten about the face by a police dog while at work on the Baird farm south of this city. Mr. Knox was engaged in running his tractor on a piece of work and as he approached the dog to walk him the big animal leaped at him and fastened his teeth in the face of his victim. One of the most drastic up sets to take place in this year's league schedule was the victory of Union over Woodstock's aspiring nine. The score was 4-2 when the end of the seventh came around and as the agreement was to conclude the game after seven innings on account of the rodeo at the fair grounds, the pennant hopes of the county -seaters took a decided flop. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of August 10, 1939) t An understanding of much significance to this community is the establishment of a select school for boys on the Saal estate at Pistakee Bay. The institution, one of the first of its kind in the country, is being founded by Major Edward Bouma, instructor at the Morgan Park Military academy in Chicago for the past twenty years. Although destined primarily for a boarding school, day students will be admitted. Capacity is estimated at 100. Trustees have chosen Pistakee Bay school as a name for the institution. The curricula have been designed to embrace the seventh and eighth grades and four years of high school. First semester classes will commence the latter'part of September. There were tense moments at our old ball park as a no-hit game was in the making throfigh seven innings. Clarence Anderson was breezin' along with brother Arnie a nice target behind the batter. Let's not tarry too long before telling you that McHenry beat Barrington 9 to 3. Barrington got a run in the seventh. Two hits and two runs were put over in the eighth before Clarence took things in hand. He whiffed three men to end the inning, making fifteen strikeouts in the game. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of August 5, 1954) Fire damage estimated at many thousands of dollars completely destroyed most of the interior of the 99-year-old historic Ringwood church. The interior, except for a portion of the basement, was gutted by flames to such an extent that repairs cannot be undertaken and only a portion of the framework stands. During the last two years, a foundation had been placed under the building, a kitchen installed and the church entirely remodelled. Now this beautiful white church has been destroyed, but memories of almost a century remain. Honored with a four-year scholarship - to Miami university, Coral Gables, Fla., is Ronald Ford. An outstanding football player during his four years at M.C.H.S., Ronald is expected to continue to star in athletics in college. The Pistakee Yacht club is host to the Wisconsin Yachting v association fleet of Inland "C" Class sail boats. This is the biggest sailing regatta of the year for this type boat and a fleet of approximately 70 is expected to race on Pistakee Lake and Pistakee Bay during the three-day race. • '•fev VY.'..- I0HN L. The original asking price of teachers was $7,800 compared to the previous starting salary of $6,700. Prior to this week's meeting, the board had finally agreed to a $7,000 figure, while the teachers had come down to $7,200. Woman of the Week in McHenry just has to be Mrs. Lester (Betty) Smith. Hardly twenty-four hours after vandals had tipped over the huge urn on the Green street safety island, spreading dirt and flowers on the ground, Mrs. Smith and her two daughters were on the scene to restore this beauty spot. It may be remembered that Mrs. Smith and her Girl Scout troop were responsible for the original planting, which has been enjoyed by passersby since early Spring. According to Glenn Peterson, McHenry fire chief, children playing in the neighborhood of the Goodyear Tire store in the McHenry Market Place set fire to refuse in a disposal bin behind the store. A Pound Around The World "Lb." is the abbreviation for the Latin "libra," meaning "pound". The original phrase was "libra pondo", -- a pound in weight. But over the centuries pondo -- "in weight", -- acquired the meaning of "pound" and "libra" was lost, except in "lb." For the Discriminating homeowner...consistent, high quality and design... Ah accumulation of potential breeding sites, like the wading pool above, could cause up to 16 percent of the local mosquito problem. The third and final phase of the local mosquito control program is now underway in Crystal Lake, Lakemoor, McHenry, McHenry Shores, Richmond, S)>ring Grove, Sunnyside, and Island Lake, among others. The last larvicide treatment of all potential mosquito breeding areas is being applied by helicopters and the first of several late summer Uttra Low Volume cold misting adulticiding treatments have started and will continue at ten- day intervals to break any disease transmission cycle. Larviciding and adulticiding as carried out in the local mosquito abatement program gives the best assurance that the mosquito population is mostly eliminated and that the surviving mosquitoes are too young to cause an outbreak of St. Louis Encephalitis. Even with such a comprehensive program, the cooperation of the residents and home owners is , - . -- f rVtti' ** ' fijyny urged to make their community virtually mosquito-free. As much as 10 percent of a community's mosquitoes may come from backyard mosquito- breeding areas. Any standing wat^r that accumlates around a home should be removed. Rain gutters, old tin cans, flower pots, kids' toys, end old tires should be emptied of all water. Backyard pools should be working properly, checked at all times, and when away for a vacation should be attended to by a responsible individual. Any standing water draws the mosquito crowd and becomes a potential breeding site for Culex pipiens, a known disease vector. "Mosquito Hot-Line" is the name of the Citizen Response system installed to efficiently answer all questions relative to our mosquito control program.
