,. au^aauA « . ALmCai ti, Uil Leaded, Unleaded-Don't m 1 Gas prices are rising, and unleaded gas is sometimes :difficult to find. The result for some motorists is a strong temptation that should be resisted. True, leaded gas is less ex- pensive-usually 4 cents per gallon less -than unleaded. But pennies saved at the pump by '*fuel switching" may later lead to additional dollars in repair bills. For example, most drivers of cars requiring unleaded gas may not realize that the use of leaded gas necessitates changing oil and spark plugs twice as often as the manufacturer recommends for lead-free fuel. Failure to "double-up" on this main tenance may result in mechanical problems and accelerated engine wear. Similarly, other car parts, Especially the carburetor and isl system, may •licioi.orate more quickly with • leaded gas. Tests by the Amoco ' f ti < ompany in 1972 on a fleet of iHes showed that lifetime C .air costs associated with > ded fuel amounted to 4.5 • ts per gallon more (at least > »nts in today's dollars) than \|'j nnleaded. addition, fuel switching ;?; void a car's warranty •» jr-'ge for emission com- •> -i > damaged by lead '* .< ;s from leaded fuel. - i • ,tng also may increase v ' . fficulty of maintaining > . anty coverage for other * sine parts susceptible to '•ure from leaded gas. > Certainly these economic considerations are important. ;>u» mother compelling reason . I- ois for sticking with nleaded gas if that is what our car requires. This reason iir and your neighbor's health. A car whose catalyst has h : eu poisoned with two or three tankfuls of leaded gas emits at least twice, and perhaps as ..u..h as eight times, the amount of lung-damaging, eye- stinging pollution as a car whose catalyst is working properly. Obviously, additional pollution further complicates ib of achieving clean air in many urban areas still • struggling to meet health- protecting standards. These same j^reas will receive added bursts of airborne lead from leaded gas that may aggravate undesirably high levels of this toxic metal in the blood of city children. In short, fuel swit ching, whatever it may do to your pocketbook, is an ex tremely bad bargain for your health. One frequently heard argument in favor of switching is that leaded gas will improve the miles per gallon of unleaded cars. However, as arguments go, this one is strictly low- octane. Fuel economy is a function of a gasoline's "heat of com bustion," that is the amount of energy it released when bur ned. The heat of combustion of unleaded gas is highter than leaded, so logically one would expect better m.p.g. from the unleaded fuel. Some tests have shown this. For example, last year the Exxon company tested eight major brands and found that unleaded gas gave slightly better miles-per-gallon than MCHENRY HEARING AID NEW HOURS! 10 TO5 P.M. EVERY WED. More dramatic is the difference for the 1979 Datsun B-210 (5- speed manual transmission): 35 m.p.g. for the unleaded model versus 28 m.p.g. for the leaded version. The En vironmental Protection agency knows of no scientific support for the contention that unleaded gas inhibits a car's miles per gallon. Federal rules under the Clean Air act make it illegal for service station attendants to I W^Wi Me Kate" Auditions ' ' , . . • • • ; ; £ '• **.< J, put leaded fuel in unleaded, cars. They may be fined up to $10,000 for doing so. Federal law doesn't penalize the in dividual car owner or driver, but EPA is of the opinion that 34 state rules do prohibit fuel switching by individual drivers or bar them from operating cars with poisoned catalysts. One exception to these prohibitions is the emergency use of a small amount of leaded in a catalyst car whose tank is nearly empty in an area vv without unleaded gas nearby. In any case, legal sanctions may matter little when the driver of an unleaded vehicle (perhaps after a long wait) faces a pump of leaded gas a nickel par gallon cheaper than the required fuel. Here the right choice depends upon his or her conscience and common sense. Let's hope that the driver stays with the unleaded fuel. Switching is short-sighted economics and a blow to breathable air.
