Floyds's in Carpentersville was the setting for the Aug. 24 celebration of the eightieth birthday of Tom Phalin, lifetime resident of McHenry. Tom Phalin is one of eight children of the late John M. and Julia Phalin, and he married the former Ellen Spencer at St. Patrick's Feb. 1, 1922. For the first time in more than thirty years, all of Tom and Ellen's children were able to visit them together. There are four sons: Larry of Cary, Donald of Crystal Lake, Jack of McHenry and Bill of Texas. Their daughter, Patricia, came to join the gathering from Tennessee. The Phalins are also grandparents and great- grandparents many times over. Two Phalin brothers, Larry, the family historian, and Donald, reminisced about the family's local beginnings among the Irish settlers during the 1840's. According to Larry's records, Tom Phalin's grandparents were the third couple to be married in St. Patrick's parish in 1857. His Grandmother Powers was the first graduate in the United States from Oberlin college, Ohio, in 1850. His Grandfather Powers served in the Civil War. It was also noted that Tom Phalin and his seven brothers and sisters attended Terra Cotta-^"district 44 school, believed to be the last one-room schoolhouse in the county. Mr. Phalin has been retired from part-time employment for nine months, and worked for many years with William Spencer at the McHenry Flour Mill. oecoooeoooooeccoscooooooooeoooooooofiiev A MOTHER'S FAREWELL We used to walk hand in hand - Just you and me - and Mickey Mouse - and sometimes Pooh Bear too! We shared our smiles and sunny days with Bozo clowns and hopscotch games and drizzled chocolate sauce. We spent our frowns on foolish things like closet ghosts and Halloween witches and bedtime stalls and spankings. But now your hand slips out from mine And waves to me instead. - The yellow bus goes down the road. - A leaf falls from a tree. The Mouse and I head for home. And he soon leaves for lack of company. If you are one of many young men and women who is leaving home to begin you first year of college, you can certainly look forward to many new and exciting experiences. One of the new, but perhaps not so exciting experiences, may be doing your own laundry. "Machine washable syn thetic fibers have made wash day a lot easier," says Kathi Heberer, Extension Home Economics adviser for McHenry county. To be an "A" student inlaundry 101, follow these laiindering tips. -Don't mix your jeans with delicate fabrics. -Don't jam everything into one washload. -Don't pour bleach or fabric softener directly onto clothing in the washer. -Don't bring two or three month's worth of dirty clothes home to mom.
