Hiller And Hamm Wins First Annual Nail Softball Tournament Hiller & Hamm won the first annual Rusty Nail Twelve Inch Softball Tournament held at Petersen Park on August 25 and 26. The champions defeated J&J Machine from Carp- tersville 13-4 in the final game of the 16 team tourney to earn the trophy and the money. - H & H displayed a fine hitting attack throughout the tourney, 71 hits total, and proved too strong for the team from Carpentersville. J&J Machine 'ran out of gas' after upsetting two good teams, Kiss-It from Cary and, The Jokers out of Buffalo Grove. . J&J Machine won their opener by beating the Sting from Harvard 14-3. Jim Cusack had 3 hits while Steve Haack drove in 3 runs and scored 3 runs with a single and triple. Dan Thielke drove in 4 more "runs on 2 singles and a sacrifice. In the second round J&J's first 3 batters walked and scored on Bob Jone's 3-run triple and Kiss-It never recovered as the potentially strong team from Cary fell 12-3. Steve Haack had 4 hits in 4 at bats with 2 RBI's. The semi-final opponent for J&J Machine was a strong 'Joker' club from Buffalo Grove who had just upset Old Bridge-John's Sport Stop 11-9 in a second round game. The 'Machine' surprised quite a few fans in holding off the Jokers and Bob Jones paced the 12-9 victory with 3 hits, 2 runs and 3 RBI's. HILLER & HAMM ROLLS The champs, composed of local talent, swept their first round game in convincing fashion by running over the Giants from Carpentersville 16- 3 in five innings. Twig Miller and Jim Yaworski each had 3 hits while Ron Miller went 2 for 2 with 5 RBI's. In second round action H&H demolished Northland Con struction from Woodstock 14-0 in five innings. The winners outhit their opponents 19-3 with Jeff Meyers and Jim Yaworksi both getting 3 hits and Don Bentz, Jr. adding a 2-run homer and sacrifice fly. The semi-final matchup had Morenz Maintenance meeting Hiller & Hamm in a game most expected to be even slugfest. It turned into a tense low scoring game until Hiller & Hamm's Jim Meyers' third base hit of the game produced the winning tally in the bottom of the eighth inning, giving H&H a 4-3 win. Morenz Maintenance, another local team, was led by Myron Bentz's 4 for 4.Tom Hurckes' 3 for 3 and Don Prazaks' 2 RBI's. CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH Left fielder Fred Wanker and right fielder Jim Cusack opened the J&J first inning with back to back base hits in the championship tilt. Both scored one out later when shortsop Bob Wilde and catcher Bob Jones hit successive singles. Hiller and Hamm opened their half of the first with 4 straight hits. Jeff Meyers doubled, Jim Yaworski singled in Meyers, Ron Miller doubled in Yaworski and Twig Miller slammed the third double of the inning after Ron had scored on a throwing error. Twig scored MCHENRY HEARING AID NEW HOURS! 10 TO5 PH. EVERY WED. WHY /T(81S) 1385-7661 % McHENRY HEARING AID Discount Service Ceiter EVERY WED. 10 TO 5 PJL 3937 W. After a 3 up, 3 down J&J Machine second inning Hiller &Hamm took advantage of a dropped fly ball in right Held to score 2 unearned runs in the bottom of the second. In the third inning J&J Machine threatened but a' double play erased any chance of scoring. H&H proceeded to take a commanding 10-2 lead when six of their first seven batters hit safely. Third baseman Gary Gilly narrowed the lead to 10-4 with his two out two run single in the fourth but Hiller & Hamm added 3 more insurance runs to cap the scoring. J&J Machine threatened in each of the next innings before going 3 up, 3 down in the final inning. In the fifth another H&H doubleplay, their sixth of the tourney, wiped out the Machine. Again in the sixth the first two runners reached base but were stranded on 3 suc cessive flyouts. Jim Yaworski led the champs during the 4 game tourney with 9 hits in 14 at bats. Twig Miller, Jim Meyers and Jeff Meyers had 8 hits each while Vinnie Freund went 7 for 11. Ron Miller and Don Bentz, Jr. were tops in RBI's with 7 each. Steve Haack had 9 for 14 to lead J&J Machine. RDG President, Dick Doherty, provided all trophies while Tournament Director, Dave Sundby, says, "Next year will even be better!" Although no record was kept of "paid customers" the hundreds of fans who saw at least one game can attest that Dave and the rest of the Nail crew have started something which is certain to turn into an 'Annual Happening' which McHenry can be proud of. Ginny Lazar reported from the Nifty Niners that their Most-Pars-Net event was won by Martha McCrary who parred seven of the nine holes. Lorraine Young low-putted with 14 and also chipped in on no. 4. This has been a good season for the women golfers at McHenry but, as in all things, will be winding down fairly soon. Two facets of the season remain to be reported. The Lady Golfer of the season, determined by the number of events entered and won has been determined. Shari Weak- man, one of our newer golfers is the winner this year and our heartiest congratulations go to her. The winners of the Ringer event are still to be determined and will be reported next time. The next two weeks are listed as Free Day and Golf on your own consequently, there will be no scheduled events. Sept. 18 will feature a Tennessee Dog Fight followed by a-Criers Tournament on the 25th which will conclude the golfing season. So, 'til next time. Happy Golfing!
