Otherwise the con sequences of undetected vision problems would years ago have made a vision test a requirement for children about to enter school for the first time in every state of the nation. One out of every 20 children already has a vision disorder in the preschool years. Many of these defects can most suc cessfully be treated in the early years - and some of them, notably amblyopia, also called "lazy-eye," should be caught and treated before age 6 to prevent permanent reduction of vision or blindness in the affected eye. The International Year of the Child 1979 (IYC) has been designated by the United Nations to enlist widespread cooperation to provide children with enhanced opportunities and protections. This publication supports the position of the National Society to Prevent Blindness, that safeguarding a child's sight is a priority protective measure. During September, National Sight-Saving Month this year, the society is focusing on alerting the public to the eye care needs of children, and enlisting support to strengthen on-going efforts to prevent blindness. The society is stepping up its efforts for early discovery of vision problems in children by expanding distribution of its Home Eye test. This simple and reliable test allows parents to check preschoolers' vision at home. The Home Eye test provides for informing parents if a child First In Eye Emergency When Johnny comes in from the backyard after a happy afternoon of play, the first thing ' on his mind may be a cookie and a glass of milk and the ball game he wants to see next week. But the afternoon may not always go so well. Sometimes he rushes in to Mom with bumps and bruises...or perhaps even an eye (emergency. The National Society to Prevent Blindness points out that some 160,000 children suffered eye injuries last year. More often than not, they oc curred in everyday, un supervised play. "And about 41 percent of all accidents causing vision impairments happen around the home," according to Virginia S. Boyce, executive director of the society. Joining the United Nations' International Year of the Child, the society urges parents everywhere to learn how to cope quickly with children's eye emergencies. "Knowing how to handle an eye injury could save sight - seconds count," Mrs. Boyce said. Among common causes of accidents around the home are ordinary horseplay, careless use of everyday objects, hazardous toys, and burns from 4 strong chemicals found in many household ' and garden products. 4 • The Society recommends these first aid procedures: BLOWS TO THE EYE. Apply cold compresses im mediately, for 15 minutes; again each hour as needed to reduce pain and swelling. In case of discoloration or "black eye," which could mean in ternal damage to the eye - see a doctor. CHEMICAL BURNS: Eye damage from chemical burns may be serious! In all cases of eye contact with chemicals, flood the eye with water, continuously and gently, for at least 15 minutes. Hold the head under a faucet or pour water into the eye using any clean container. Keep the eye open wide during the flooding. Then see a doctor as quickly as possible. DO NOT use an eye cup or bandage the eye. CUTS AND PUNCTURES; Bandage the eye lightly and see a doctor at once. DO NOT wash the eye with water or try to remove an object stuck in the eye. SPECKS IN THE EYE: Lift the upper eyelid outward and down over the lower lid and let tears wash out the speck or particle. Do not rub the eye. If it doesn't wash out - keep the eye closed, bandage it lightly and see a doctor.
