Golfing was great, you know win a few, you lose a few, but the fresh air won over all the elements. It is great to get back to the typewriter, and keep you up to date on the activities of all the Warrior teams, along with high school sports throughout the state. The Warriors of Coach Joe Schlender open their season tomorrow at Stevenson high school. It is only one of two daylight game this season for the Warriors. Evidently the Dundee School District no. 300 plans failed to provide lighting for the schools in the district, namely Dundee, Jacobs, Crown and Hamsphire. The Warriors will travel to Jacobs on Saturday, October 13. . Coach Chuck Cuda's golfers easily won over Marian Central last week at the Plum Tree National at Harvard. They have a full schedule this week, playing at Grant, and Antioch, while hosting Elgin Larkin. The dean of McHenry coaches while not having an outstanding squad, nevertheless when the chips are down, will hold their own with anyone in this part of the state. It looks as if in the future in the I.H.S.A. football playoffs, there will be no "At Large Teams". This will mean only conference champions will be able to compete for the state playoffs. This is too early to start on the I.H.S.A. and their monkey works, but you can bet they will get a lot of flak from a lot of schools in regards to their playoff system. ~ "Hutch's" freshmen cross country team started the season out in fine style by winning the Libertyville Invitational. The varsity will be a little thin this season, but the future looks GREAT for the veteran coach. While speaking of numbers the football squads at McHenry seem to be a bit on the small size. Only thirty-one are listed on the frosh squad, Coach Dan Boland has a hefty squad of twenty-four on his sophomore squad. And .the varsity numbers forty-two. Parents and fans, you are not going to have a winning program with that few numbers in your football program. I don't know what the reason for the small numbers are, but if it continues, where can you expect to compete. Maybe the Little 8, Huntley, Richmond etc. It is time for the old crystal ball again. Woodstock seems to be the class of Northern Illinois, with Mike Nelson at halfback who ran 1,457 yards last season to easily defeat Marian Central an Saturday at Marlau. Crystal Lake South to defeat Grant at Crystal lake on Friday night. (Only game on tap for Friday night, the scouts will be like flies at the game) Dundee to beat Grayslake in a low scoring game. Jacobs to beat Marengo, although Rod Poppe Marengo coach is a sly one. Bob Carlson, new coach at Crown to win his first game over Lake Zurich and break a 10 game losing streak for the Vikings. The Tigers of Bill Mack to take Antioch. Don't count the veteran coach out of any game. He gets the best of his material. Cary Grove with Neil Britt who I thought last season for a sophomore quarterback was a good one to defeat Wauconda in the best game of the day. Stevenson to defeat the Warriors in a close one. If the Warrior offense can score it could be a real thriller. My upset of the day, the Warhawks of Johnsburg over Winnebago in a ding dong battle. SPECIAL MCC MEET A special meeting of the McHenry County college board will be held in the board room of the college, Route 14 and Lucas road, Crystal Lake, Sept. 20, at 7:30 p.m., for the purpose of discussing personnel mat­ ters. The meeting will be conducted in open session or closed session in accordance with the Illinois Open Meetings act. 4 As fall approaches, most Illinois homeowners are preparing to have their fur­ naces cleaned and readied for winter. Attorney General William J. Scott recommends a thorough check by a furnace repair company to make sure the furnace is in good working order before another winter comes. However, Scott stresses that it is important that homeowners deal only with reputable firms. U n f o r t u n a t e l y , m a n y fraudulent operators exist in this field. Michael A. Benedetto, chief of Scott's. Consumer Protection division, notes that recently the Con­ sumer division has received complaints against as many as 27 furnace repair outfits in the Chicago area-many involve the samfe persons who simply close one operation and open another under another name. These operators tend to prey on senior citizens or persons living alone who are easily frightened by scare tactics. Senior citizens are encouraged to have a son, daughter, or other relative or friend with them when they make the deal. These con men gain access to a person's home either by going door-to-door or by some trick, such as sending a postcard saying their company has previously examined the furnace and it is time for another check. Once inside, some of the most unscrupulous will actually damage or simulate cracks or other damage to the furnace. Then the scare stories begin- •Vio lethal gas or it may explode at any minute. The con man says there is no time to waste. If fhe homeowner does not have money in the house to pay for immediate repair, the con man will drive the victim to the bank to withdraw it. Attorney General Scott suggests con­ sumers never allow anyone to pressure them into doing this. Holding back payment till the job is done is one way of en­ suring satisfactory service, though your chances of getting satisfactory work from a con artist is almost nil. Scott says the safest way to avoid trouble is to never let a door-to-door solicitor-whom you do not know and whom your friends do not know-do anything to your house.
