Rotes & Reels in Sti ibied I Ready to go throw the ball like they I- PLAIN DEALER - FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14,1979 E 6 , -v: m fOOTBALL • 4 *•>. By Pete Fritchie WASHINGTON -- One has to respect the views of Joe Robbie, of the Miami Dolphins, in his explanation of why he refused to continue the pre-season exhibition between the Dolphins and the Tampa Bay Bucs. Miami was in the position of having little to gain. Also, as Robbie pointed out, too many injuries are likely in a game that rivals-for the Bucs dearly want to beat their more famous state competition-a season game, in interest and intensity. Robbie says he had three top players hurt in the exhibi tion game in 1978, including Bob Griese. Nevertheless, : after respecting these views, it's too bad the game can't continue to be played. It was a money maker-and something is wrong when two teams, their coaches and players, can't be brought to reason and a common outlook on a "natural" game of this kind. Behind the action lies a family angle, the opposition of . Tampa's owner to Robbie's wife's involvement in soccer at Fort Lauderdale. That shouldn't be injected into pro football scheduling. But humans being human, it's a big emotional factor. Dr. Donald Kidd Is shown with his trophy for winning first place in his division for the 54-hole club championship at the Crystal Lake Country club and the silver plate for second in the round robin team tennis. Other winners included second in bis division of the Sherwood match play (72 holes); second in his division of the He-She golf tournament; and first in team tennis for the holiday tournament. He tied for second in the grandfathers' golf tournament. Why don't you journey down to McCracken Field Friday night and watch the Warriors in action. You won't be disappointed. Eddie Bimbo seems real sad about the Cubs fading from the pennant race. It grieves me to see those Cub fans so sad. There is another year coming. The Cubs have made some good trades in recent years. Maybe they can turn a couple of tricks during the off season, then be off the? wingin' in 1980. Met Mrs. Sam jTomt Cub fan through thick and- and she wants a new manager. "Herman Franks never should have been named manager in the first place," was her remark. Of course, her main interest at the time was a beautiful, little grandchild. The last time Bruce Sutter, said to he the best relief pitcher in the game, got clobbered, Marie Yegge was irate. Marie pointed out that Sutter was used too many days in a row as Manager Franks was trying to help him set a record. There is an old saying: "As often as the pitcher goes to the well, it is broken at last." Can some bird watcher tell me why our feathered friends fly south before summer ends, then return before the snow has gone away in spring? --And I've always given them credit for being smart. Marian Central's football team had a rough time against the Woodstock Blue Streaks, but no worse than most fans expected. The Streaks are rated as the top team in the Fox Valley League. Of course, there are others who think one of the Crystal Lake teams will surprise when they get squared around. Let's hope the Warriors will make 'em sit up and take notice. It appears that the Johnsburg Skyhawks have their work cut out for them after a disap pointing first game. They won't lack spirit. Met Elroy Fitzgerald Sunday night and learned that he will be one of the officials in the McHenry-Woodstock football game. Veterans like Elroy have to keep on the job. There seems to be p shortage of officials for all SportS.. V Some young fellows refuse to lake the abuse and criticism dished out by the crowds. Fitzgerald isn't too happy with Bill Veeck and the White Sox. Letting the rock groups in to wreck the field hasn't been popular with Sox fans. All year the Sox managers have been slow to give pitchers the hook. Even watching TV, it is evident to any ordinary club when a pitcher loses his stuff and starts coming in with high ones. Just one more batter. Boom! An old time, non-conference rival football team will come to town Friday night from Grant Township. We have seen some good rough and tough teams come out of that school. This year were in a baseball game. Let's be there. • • • • Not knowing the^ answer is only halfWliard as admitting not knowing Marian Central volleyball teams played Crystal Lake South Monday, Sept. 10, and according to coach Mary Stoner, though the varsity lost, the girls chalked up two strong matches, and played well. The results are as follows: Varsity Sandi Hasting, Wonder Lake, was next highest with 4 points. The Frosh-Soph team won its match by the following scores: Julie Nylander of McHenry scored 15 points and served 7 ace serves. Jean Thompson, McHenry, scored 8 points and served 5 ace serves. Laura Franks, McHenry, in her first time playing/served 6 ace serves. Herbert Hoover The Warriors surprised a lot of fans last Saturday at Stevenson. Many thought they would be blown out of the park, but the Warriors hung in until the final seconds. - It was quite evident that Joe Schlender has his team in good shape. When the going got tough in the final period, it was the Stevenson crew that were falling like flies over iji; the field. !:•: For the first time in years I got S.I.H. to give up his :j:| Saturday afternoon soap operas and accompany me to the ij: game. The girls' volleyball and field hockey teams will get under way later this week, and we should have some results later. The crystal ball got a little cracked last week. Only five of eight right, is not a good average, but high school football is almost like the pro's. Anyone can win at any given time. iji: We'll try and do better this week. Grant to edge the Warriors. The Warriors have to get their offense in gear, and defense cannot do all the scoring. ' 4 Crystal Lake Central in a nip and tuck game against Warren. Can't believe the Gators are as bad as they showed last week. Dundee over St. Ed's. St. Ed's won last year, and the Cards are out for revenge this season. Crown to break their losing streak over Round Lake. New coach Bob Carlson, former Streak player, needs a victory in this one. Lake Zurich over Cary. This is a toss up.
