' Wallpapering is easier now tor the do-it- yourselfer than ever before. Consumers have a wide selection of easy, do-it-yourself wall jcoverings to choose from and they can redecorate homes and apartments without expensive remodeling. "Wallpaper has changed drastically in the last 10 years along with fashion and design," said Ike Bitton of Plvwood Milh n--ota. a large discount distributor of do- it-yourself wall covering, paneling, carpeting and cabinetry. "Now there is a wide variety of exciting patterns, textures and novelty prints on the market as well as elegant selections," he said. "And due to the improvements, it's easier than ever for the consumer to wallpaper.'* ONCE, PAPERING a room meant mix ing and messing with paste and usually re quired more than one person's energy. Today, the job is much simpler due to prepasted selections, which you just soak in water for a few minutes and then apply directly onto the wall. Another type in volves applying a paste solution on the wall (instead of on the paper) and then just smoothing the wall covering over the sur face. Fabric paper, or wallpaper with a cotton backing, still must be pasted in the conven tional method because of its weight and durable characteristics. "Prepasted paper and the wall paste solution are good selections for beginners because they are relatively easy to hang," said Bitton. HE SAID Plvwood mnaaflli gives free demonstrations showing exactly how to apply the wall covering, trim corners and edges, what tools to use and hew to paper around problem areas like windows. When choosing wallpaper, says Bitton carefully base your choice on your location and the amount of time you plan on living there. If you rent an apartment or house and may move in the future, it may be best to select a strippable wall covering that is easy to remove without damaging the original wall. The same applies in a-child's bedroom where novelty prints may soon be outgrown as tastes change. In the kitchen or bathroom, a vinyl selec tion is wise. In a cooking area, this type of covering would not absorb grease and could be washed down regularly with mild cleansers. In bathrooms, where humidity tends to collect, vinyl resists moisture damage and easily wipes dry. Plywood Minnesota has the following tips to ensure the quality and durability of a wallpapering job: •Make sure walls are smooth before cover ing. If there are cracks or holes, spackle with a plaster compound and then sand un til surface is level. •Make sure there are no nails or staples protruding since they may snag or tear wallpaper. •If papering over enamel paint, sand the • surface thoroughly first. •As an extra measure, walls can be coated with Wall-Size, a diluted paste solu tion. This seals the walls before papering and makes stripping easier when remov ing the covering. •Save a sample of wallpaper and record the dye lot number so you can get an exact match if you run short while papering, or if you need to patch a damaged area in the future. DECORATING POSSIBILITIES in wallpaper are now almost endless, Bitton says. "You can really create a new at mosphere or a special effect with wallpaper," he said. "Today the tropical look is fashionable in households, so fern patterns and bamboo designs are very popular selections. There's a paper for any look, so the consumer can really be creative." p1vwn9H Minnnnig carries more than 500 selections of wallpaper, Bitton said.
